INTRODUCTION
Background
Grammar includes active and passive voice. The voice of a verb indicates whether the subject of the verb performs the action of the verb (active voice) or whether the subject of the verb is acted upon (passive voice). The object or argent in the passive voice will be the subject in the active voice.
Problem statement
Therefore, this study examines students' performance in using passive sentences in academic writing, especially in propositions in terms of percentage of incorrect. Namely, the objectives to be achieved in this research are to incorrectly and correctly identify the types of passive sentences in academic writing.
Objective of the Study
So the sentence should be "To collect the data from the reading test the following steps are used", "This is done by giving some questions that will be prepared beforehand by the researcher". R9.1 : The written test is used to recognize the students' performance in the use of the verb phrase. 34; The design of this research is to use a group pretest-posttest design", "Pretest given.
R3.1: The research will limit this study to the fifth semester students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University, Makassar. R6.3 The data was obtained from the English test and from the questionnaire, and here is the procedure for obtaining the data. R3.2 An interview will be conducted to obtain additional data from the students R4 R4.1 The researcher will use a written test to collect data R5 R5.1 When Indonesian learners learn a new language, linguistically.
R8.1 The following steps are used to collect the data from the reading test R8.2 This is done by giving some questions that will be prepared. R3.2 Interview will be held to get extra data from the students R4 R4.1 The researcher will use writing test to collect the data.
Significance of the Study
Scope of the Study
In this research, the researcher will find out which types of passive sentences students use incorrectly and correctly in a written proposal. It focuses on two tenses (simple present and simple future) because these two are used in a written proposal.
Performance
Concept of Passive Voice
- Definition Passive Voice
- Pattern of Passive Voice
- Verbs Which Cannot be Used in the Passive Form
- The Component of Passive Voice
According to Azar (1993) in Nursehag (2020) it states that only transitive verbs (verbs followed by an object) are used in the passive. The verb used in the passive voice is changed to a past participle verb.
Reasons for Using Passive Voice
In the passive sentence, verbs like happen, sleep, come and appear (intransitive verbs) cannot be used. Meanwhile, Swick (2005) argues in Nursehag (2020) that a passive sentence turns that structure into a direct object which I used as the subject. be+ “past participle” + by+ subject used as the object of the preposition. Eastwood (2008) argues in Nursehag (2020) that if we want to say who or what is doing the action while using the passive voice, we use the preposition through.
Transforming the Form Passive Voice
According to Hariyanto & Waluyo in Wahyuni, T. 2019) assert that the active voice that can be made into the passive voice is only whose predicate is transitive which is a verb that still requires an object. While the active voice whose predicate is intransitive, which is a verb, does not require an object, it cannot be used as a passive voice, eg: go, reach, come, see, sleep, bleed, etc. There are intransitive verbs in the active voice, but they have meaning as passive voice, such as: taste, smell, feel, etc.
English Language Learners Difficulties With Learning and Using the
Apart from Elmadwi (2015), Choomthong (2011) Somphong (2013) who focused on secondary and university students (learners), other general treatments of the challenges their target ESL/EFL L2 learner have or may encounter in and the use of the English passive voice. This study is similar to these studies because it aims to find out what difficulties ESL learners have in learning and using the English passive voice. However, this study is different because it is a study of the problems of first-year university Igbo learners in learning and using the English passive voice and the strategies they adopt to overcome their problems.
To my knowledge, there is a lack of literature on the difficulties Igbo learners face in learning and using the English passive voice and the grammar learning strategies they employ to overcome their challenges.
Concept of Academic Writing
- Definition of Academic Writing
- Types of Writings That are Included in Academic Writing
This research aimed to analyze the mistakes made by second-year students of the English department in using the passive voice in the subject of academic writing. Because of the broad definition of academic writing Because academic writing has such a broad definition, many different types of scholarly writing can be classified as academic writing. College books, business books, and textbooks are just a few examples of literature that can be classified as academic writing.
Research papers/articles are pieces of academic writing based on problem formulations, theoretical underpinnings and research results of problems.
Features of Academic Writing
R2.3: The researcher observes 10 students who have been assigned to give a presentation by the lecturer on the topic of the international conference in speaking for the advanced subject A class in a meeting. R5.1: The writer interested to research the fricative consonant especially in the fifth semester of Muhammadiyah University Makassar to know the degree of understanding of the student from the fifth semester to the fricative consonant, and the thing that causes the wrong pronunciation in the fricative consonants R5. 2: Qualitative research used to produce an analysis procedure without. So the sentence should be "In SMPN 1 Galut the teaching of English especially speaking is limited by media and method, this is the reason that makes the researcher to carry out this research", "This research is designed to help students to improve their English their, especially their speech", "The data is taken.
The mistakes made from the two sentences do not use the auxiliary verb 'to be'. The sentence should be"The research will be limited this study on the fifth semester students from the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar", "Interview will be held to get additional data from the students." R6.1 : The habit of how the students speak is acquired by repeating words over and over R2.3 The researcher observes 10 students who are given the task of making a presentation by the teacher on the subject of international conference in speaking for Advance subject of A class in a meeting.
R5.1 The author is interested in research on fricative consonant especially in the fifth semester of Muhammadiyah Makassar University to know the extent of the student's understanding from fifth semester to fricative consonant, and the thing that causes the mispronunciation in fricative consonants. R6.4 The habit of how the students speak is learned by repeating words over and over.
Research Desigh
Research Subject
In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling. Purposive sampling is a sampling technique used by researchers if the researcher has certain considerations in taking the sample. The researcher took only students whose proposal exam was on October 27, 2021 with a GPA value of 3.70 to research. The reason for using the purposive sampling technique is because 3.70 is not the highest score. So the researcher thinks that in using passive sentences, students use passive sentences correctly and incorrectly.
Therefore, the researcher conducted this study so that the readers know that there are still wrong and correct that are done by the students in writing passively.
Research Instrument
The subjects of this research were eighth semester students in 2016 in the Department of English Education at Muhammadiyah University, Makassar.
Data Collection
The readers can find out what is correct and incorrect from what students do in writing passive sentences.
Data Analysis
The researcher entered everything including the passive sentences in the table and then the researcher analyzed the passive sentences of the students, what is correct and what is incorrect in the sentences. In this step, the researcher draws conclusions and checks the answers to the research questions, which is done when displaying data by comparing documents. Those that the researcher came to the conclusion of the incorrect and correct analysis of the types of passive sentences in the simple present and simple future is based on the written proposal of the students in the eighth semester of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
The findings of this study related to the answers to questions about the types of passive sentences made incorrectly by the students when using passive sentences in academic writing.
Findings
This is because the verb used in the sentence is not a past participle. Based on the extract above, it can be seen that the passive sentence written by R1 is correct because the sentence is in accordance with the existing formula (s+is/am/is+V3). Based on the extract above, it can be seen that the passive sentence written by R2 is correct because the sentence is structured according to the existing.
Based on the extract above, it can be seen that the passive sentence written by R7 is correct because the formula used in the sentence is consistent with the existing formula.
Discussion
First, students misplace or use auxiliary verbs when writing passive sentences, they write using the auxiliary verb 'is' in sentences where the subject of the sentence is plural and not singular. Second, students who make mistakes by using the simple past auxiliary verb instead of the simple present auxiliary verb. Not only with the auxiliary verb 'to be', but students also make mistakes when using the past tense.
They use the simple form of the verb without changing it into verb 3 or past participle in the sentence.
