This undergraduate thesis presented is partial fulfillment of the requirement of Sarjana Pendidikan Islam (S.Pd.I) Degree in English Education Program in STAIN of Jurai Siwo Metro. The result of the pre-test reading comprehension in the students of the ninth grade (control class) of SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 3 Metro.

The result of pre-test reading comprehension of ninth grade students (experimental class) in SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 3 Metro. Post-test reading comprehension outcome of ninth grade students (control class) in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Theoretically, pre-questioning itself can build the students' interest and motivation before students read the entire text. According to this study, students can improve their reading comprehension if they know about pre-questioning and it is very important to understand about pre-questioning to get good reading comprehension. The English standard value in this school is 65, so from the data above it can be known that the students' reading comprehension is low, and after an interview with the teacher and the students, the researcher finds some cases in the teaching of English, especially on reading subject.

The main factor that affects this problem is low reading strategy and technique, and most of the students are not interested in the topic because they think that the topics are very difficult to understand. Based on the above explanation, the researcher is interested in finding out the effect of pre-questioning on reading comprehension in ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3.

Objective and Benefits of the Study

By providing a reference to the development of the teaching learning process, especially in reading, asking questions beforehand can improve the students' reading comprehension. Contribute to the students how to improve their ability to understand the reading text.

Theoretical Review

  • Reading
  • Pre Questioning

In understanding a topic, the readers interact with the text related to the prior questioning of the text to previous experiences of constructed meaning that can be found in the text. Pre-questioning before reading can help the student to understand the content of the text. Prior knowledge helps the students to understand what is written and to make inferences or predictions about the text.

Students will be motivated to read when they realize they need something from the text. Interest is one of the important factors for increasing students' reading comprehension achievement. Because it is impossible for a student to understand a text if he has no interest and motivation to read.

The reading teacher should be careful when choosing text and assigning tasks because they are related to the student's reading comprehension. In this study, the researcher wanted to use preliminary questioning to make a general framework of knowledge. Pre-questioning as a tool to force students to extract specific information from the text.

These pre-questions are designed to give students detailed information that they should find throughout the text.20. Based on the explanation above, in this study, the researcher asked only two types of pre-questions, namely: pre-reading questions for general understanding and pre-reading pre-questions to confirm expectations. Related to this research, the researcher uses pre-questions with the Indonesian version, because the form of pre-questions is only to discuss the background knowledge of the students.

Thus, students can easily predict what will be discussed in the text after reading and answering the preliminary questions. 20 Mahdalena, Leny, Effects of pre-questioning on reading comprehension achievement of second grade students in SMAN-2 Jekan Raya, Palangkaraya, 2007.

Theoretical Framework and Paradigm

  • Theoretical Framework

The question about supporting details asks the reader to find detail information that is explicitly printed in the text. It is usually signed by words such as: according to the author…; according to the passage …; who, what, when, where, why, how, which. Here are some examples of questions to ask about supporting details: 1) Which of the following questions does the passage answer?.

Based on the above concept, the researcher tries to investigate the influence of pre-questions on reading comprehension and draw the result from the research. Students are expected to be actively engaged in understanding a text as well as possible, after asking questions beforehand. Therefore, the implementation of pre-questions is important to build the student's motivation and as a result, the student will take the lesson seriously and participate in it.

Students must understand and know the content of a text as the teacher has given it to them. If the grade for the students' advance questions is high, the grade for the students' reading comprehension will also be high. If the grade for the students' advance questions is fair, the grade for the students' reading comprehension will also be fair.

If the grade for the students' advance questions is low, the grade for the students' reading comprehension will be as well.

  • Sampling Technique
  • Independent Variable
  • Dependent Variable

The experimental class as the class that uses pre-questions in reading comprehension, and the control class as the class that does not use pre-questions in reading comprehension, and this whole action is to know whether pre-questions have any influence on students' reading comprehension. Operational definition is "the definition that is based on characteristics of the things that will be defined and it can be observed or measured."28 Meanwhile, variable can be defined as a characteristic of a person or object that is "different" from person to person or from object to object. The independent variable (X) in this research is the implementation of pre-questions in the teaching reading, especially on reading comprehension of the ninth graders in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro in the academic year 2011/2012.

The students must be able to understand a text well, after being given a preliminary quiz. Dependent variable (Y) of this research is Reading Comprehension at in the ninth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro in the academic year it can be known the students must understand the content of a text and know what the teacher gave it to them .

Data Collection Method

  • Documentation
  • Test
  • Interview

And the documentation is used to know the data history of students, teacher, staff and other elements of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro. The test is used to recognize the students' skills in the English language, it can be related to the grammatical meaning of the text, the meaning of the vocabulary, etc. In this research, pre-test and post-test will be conducted either for the experimental class or for the control class.

Description of Data 1. Research Setting

  • Research Data a. Result of Pre Test

The objectives of SMP Muhamamdiyah 3 of Metro are: quality output, professionalism, having a certain quality and religious. Based on the above table shows that the average score of pre-test in the control class is 51.61 and the experimental class is 46.67, the criteria for the students who are successful in mastering the material are the students who get the minimum standard (KKM ), which is 65, this means that the result of the students' reading comprehension in the pre-test was not satisfactory. It is for this reason that the researcher uses the pre-questioning strategy as an alternative strategy to teach reading.

After applying the treatment three times using pre-questions for the experimental class, the post-test was then given to both the experimental and control classes. The Influence of Pre Questioning toward Reading Comprehension

A t-test is a statistical test used to compare two means to determine the probability that an effect is a true effect. In this case, the writer wants to know the positive and significant impact of pre-questioning on reading comprehension. Ha: There is a positive and significant influence of pre-questioning on reading comprehension among ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro in the academic year 2011/2012.

Ho: There is no positive and significant influence of preliminary questions on reading comprehension among the ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro in the academic year 2011/2012. The criteria for testing the hypothesis are Ha if t-observed is greater than t-table and accepted Ho if t-observed is less than t-table. From the result of the calculation using SPSS 10 for windows above, significant level from table t according to the rules df = n-1 and get ftable from df=26.

In conclusion, there is a positive and significant influence of preliminary questions on reading comprehension in ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 in the academic year 2011/2012. The last step in the data analysis is the hypothesis test and for the analysis of the data the researcher used the t-test. A t-test is a statistical test used to compare two means to determine if the difference is really different.

It can be seen from the test of reading comprehension scores in the control and experimental classroom. Based on the data analysis and the result of the calculation of the above data, it can be concluded that there is a positive and significant impact of pre-questions towards reading comprehension in ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 in the academic year 2011/2012. .

Limitation

Some students were unable to answer the reading comprehension test questions because they did not master the vocabulary.
