Survey, From a Study of Medical Students’ Perceptions of and Responses to Disparities in Health Care During Clinical Clerkships, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, 2016–2017

Medical Student Perceptions of Health Care Disparities During Clerkships

We are interested in capturing medical student perceptions of health care disparities during clerkships. Health care disparities have been defined as unequal quality and experience of health care based on patients’ social or clinical characteristics, after accounting for clinical

appropriateness and patient preference. Health care disparities can include differential care, inappropriate care, or disrespectful remarks and interactions between a provider and patient.

Open-Ended Questions

1. Please describe a situation during your third year clerkships that stands out in your mind as an instance when you directly observed a health care disparity.

2. Did you attempt to address the disparity? Why or why not?

3. To your knowledge, did anyone else attempt to address the disparity?

4. Currently, hospital-wide “unusual occurrence” incident reporting systems are used by health care providers to report any event or condition that may have an adverse effect on the health or safety of a patient, visitor, volunteer, student, or employee. This system allows providers to make such reports either anonymously or to include their name with the report. What are your thoughts on including health care disparities as “unusual occurrences “in the hospital-wide incident

reporting system?

5. What would make you more willing to use such a system?

6. What would make you less willing to use such a system?
