1. Portal vein pressure measurementThe pressure in the portal vein was measured with a pressure device and recorded in cmH2O before and when the portal vein was clamped, and 5, 15, 30 and 45 min after the completion of the anastomosis and reperfusion in small size graft liver transplantation (SSGLT) recipient rats.
Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) was performed as a control group. There was no significant difference in body weight between donor and recipient rats, and all donor livers had cold ischemia for1 hour. There was not any significant difference in the preparation of donor liver, the duration of “the lack of liver” and the implantation of donor livers in recipient rats between groups.
2. Results
We monitored the portal pressure in recipient rats of small size liver transplantation, and the results are shown in Table 1. It is notable that there was a significant increase in the portal pressure during 5-45 min after starting reperfusion in 30% graft size recipient rats compared to the whole liver transplantation (the OLT group). As expected, the treatment with MnTBAP did not affect the portal pressure. Although whether the portal pressure effectively reflects the portal blood flow rates needs a further validation, a significant increase in the portal pressure may partially indicate the disordered portal circulation in SSGLT recipient rats, for which antioxidant, such as MnTBAP is not effective.

OLT=Whole orthotopic liver transplantation. * indicates the statistical significance in comparing with OLT group (p<0.05). It is evident that after starting reperfusion, the portal pressure was significantly increased in small size graft liver transplantation (SSGLT) compared with OLT recipient rats (n=5 in each group). There was no significant difference between SSGLT and SSGLT+MnTBAP groups, indicating that MnTBAP treatment did not affect the portal pressure.
