MEDICINE is taught in this Institution NINE months annudlly. There will be two Sessions, but only one public commencement, as they count for one Course. A Summer Session, commencing the first Mon- day of each April, continues four months, and is especially devoted to Clinical Instruction, Practical

Demons~ration,

and daily Examinations.

The regular W-inter Session opens the first Monday of each

N

ovem·

her, and Commencement is held early in March following. Students may, however, be examined for the degree in July.

A PTeliminary Course of Lectures, free to all Students, will be

~Siv·

en by the Professors, commencing on the first ::'.Ionday of October; and, at the same time, the Anatomical Rooms will be opened for Students, under the supervision of the Professor of Anatomy. The Ticket for Practical Anatomy is obligatory one session.

The TENNESSEE STATE HoSPITAL, under the direction of the Fa.

culty, is open to the Class, free of charge; and a Clinique has been es- tablished in c!>nnection with the University, at which operations are performed, and cases prescribed for and lectured upon, in the presence of the Class. The Hospital is now under the management of the Sister;; of Charity, and is in every respect, a First Class one.*

*

This Hospital is no make-shift or make-believe. It is a fine pile of substantial stone build·

ings surmounted by a dome. It presents a centre building three stories high-two wings each two stories, the entire front being 206 feet. The Hospital is capable of accommodating 15U pa·

tientsin well ventilated wards. The llospital grounds consist of 10 acres enclosed by a subs tan·

tial fence of hammered stone, and laid out in grass plots well ornamented with shade trees.

During the week the Dean has been engaged in preparing ·and superintending the Printing of this Catalogue, the following operations have been performed at the Ilospital.

1. Amputation of Thigh-male aged 38 from Georgia. 2. Amputation Arm-woman aged 25, Tennessee. 3. Amputation 'l'high-male aged 18, Tennessee. 4. Amputation middle finger at Metacarpo-Phalangeal Articulation. 5. Cataract, both eyes-male aged 58, Mississippi. 6. Cat·

arat one eye, male 52, Tennessee. 7. Catarat both eyes, male 48; ECJuth Carolina. 8. Cataract, one eye, male 45, Kentucky. 9. Exostosis of the Ferner; male aged 24, Tennessee, Tumor large.

10. Immense Psoas Abscess opened, male, aged 56. 11. Cut throat, larynx opened, (attempted suicide,) male. 12. Incised Wound of the Scalp, male aged 30. 14. Fracture into the Elbow Joint. 14. Contused Ancle, male. 15. Excision of a part of the Os Calcis, male. 16. Circum·

cision, male, aged 14; Tennessee. 17. Tapping twife of Abdomen, female, aged 1S. 18. Staphy·

lo-mphy, female, aged 27, Ohio.

'l'he whole domestic care of the Hospita is under the Sisters of Charity, who give their entire energies to the Institution. It may justly be regarded as a model Hospital, giving every advantage to the Student for Clinical Instruction, during his attendance upon the Lec- tures, of which he can possibly avail himself.
