All statements made in papers published in the Bulletin of Atoll Research are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the Smithsonian or the Bulletin's editors. The Atoll Research Bulletin was not originally part of the master plan for the Coral Atoll Program. Thus, the early issues of the Atoll Research Bulletin consisted mainly of reports from the Atoll Project: the proceedings of the 1951 symposium (issues 1 and 2), preliminary research results from the work done at Arno (issues 3-10), Onotoa (issues 12- 13), Ifalik (numbers 44 and 77) and Raroia (numbers 31-36), and an early draft of the Atoll Research Manual (number 17).
The first issue of the Atoll Research Bulletin was replicated and sent to only 300 recipients (individuals, research institutions and libraries). Since 1966, it has usually been supported by the Office of the Director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Articles were indexed in anticipation of the needs of the user (a fictional composite character who is our image of the typical Atoll Research Newsletter reader).
Following the alphabetical "Content of the Atoll Research Bulletin" (on page 67) is the first of three indexes. Raymond Fosberg of the Botany Department, National Museum of Natural History, and to Janice Goldblum and her associates in the National Academy of Sciences archives for information and recollections about the journal's history.
