theclose morphological relationship ofEurytoma
with the only phytophagic chalcidid genus, Isosoma, it has been questioned as towhether the former genus might notbe in- quilinous, or at least contain inquilinous species.From
the fact thatEurytoma
is reared almost exclusively from the habitations of endophyticinsects, the correctness or incorrect ness of this surmise is difficult to ascertain ; and while the general opinion is tothe effect thatEurytoma
is parasitic, stillno conclusive observations concerning the gall-inhabiting forms areon record, so far asI
know
; andwe must remember
thatgeneral opinion has always, untilveryrecently, considered Isosoma as a parasite, solely from a supposed necessary uni formity of habit in the family Chalcididse, or the series Parasitica.
Eurytoma
is rearedcommonly
from hymenopterous(Cynipid and Tenthredinid) and dipterous (Cecidomyiid, Trypetid andAgromyzid)
galls, as well as from the burrows inwood
of beetlesofthefamiliesCurculionidse andScolytidae,andofwood- boring bees and wasps. But two exceptions to this general statement areknown
to me.Mayr
reared E. appendigaster from a Microgaster cocoon, and Giraud reared E, nodularis from aburrowing wasp'snest, and notedthat itwas
hyperpar-asitic
upon
Cryptus bimaculatus.In orderto absolutelyprove the actual habits of the species so
commonly
reared from galls, itwill be necessary to open a gall at the proper time, notewhat
the larvae are doing, and watchthem
to maturity, and thus determine thatyou
haveEurytoma
larvae and not those ofsome
other of the verynumerous
gall-inhabiting Chalcidids.Somewhat by
accident, and certainlyby
good fortune, I have just been able to accomplish this result : In August,OF

671889, I picked a handful of galls of Cynips quercus-prunus (determined for
me
by Dr. Riley) from theground
in Covers' Lane, Georgetown, D. C., and placedthem
in a beaker onmy
officedesk.
May
17, 1890, I cutopen oneofthegallsand found six apparently full-grown parasitic larvae andthe remains ofa larvawhich
theyhad
nearly devoured. Iwas
very doubtful as tomy
success in rearing these larvae after theyhad
been thus disturbed, but I putthem away
without covering the hole.May
31 I againexamined them
and found that allhad
transformed to white pupae,which
on June ihad
turned to the natural black color, andwhich
wereat once recognizable as those of a species of Eurytoma. June 2 another gallwas
cut open and similar larvae were found not asyet transformed.No more conclusive proof will, I think, be needed as to the parasitism of this species, at least, of this genus.
Walsh
reared from C. quemis-prunus hisEurytoma prum-
cola, and I find from Prof. Riley's notes that in February, 1879, hebred a species of
Eurytoma
from galls ofC. q.-prunus collected by Mr. E. A.Schwarz
at Hearne, Texas.Examinationofthese latter specimens,
which
I foundin the NationalMuseum
collection,shows
thattheTexas Eurytomas
belong toanew
species,which may ormay
not be the same
as thatfound in the District of Columbia. Future rearing of thelatter only can determine thispoint.*
Prof. Rileystated that the parasitic habit of
Eurytoma had
been practicallyproved in hisexperience long since, and that its being thus conclusivelyshown
in this instancewas
inter esting.The
concensus of observationwas
so overwhelming that doubtwas
hardly justified; the larvae of Chalcids are easilydistinguished from those of Cynipids, and hehad
often had proof thatwas
satisfactory to himself of the fact.He
mentionedthe
much more
justifiable doubt ofsome
whether Isosoma orchidearumwas
truly phytophagic, and described having watched day after day the feeding of the Isosoma larva on the plant tissue.Mr.
Ashmead
said thatEurytoma
were frequently reared from Cecidomyiids and that the National Collectionwas
rich in such rearings.It
was
decided to dispense with the JulyandAugust
meetings.
