The Hindu empire of Majapáh, then supreme in the island, was overthrown, and the Mahometan religion became the established faith of the country. The religion of the Javanese is generally Mahometan, but mixed with many superstitious doctrines derived from ancient heathen worship. He is also obliged to remind the peasants of the proper season for cultivating the lands.
Whatever their more ancient beliefs may remain in the institutions, antiquities, habits, and devotions of the Javanese, the island abounds in less perishable ones. On one of these, within about a hundred yards south-east of Bandar's * house, stands.

In Banyuwangi, the easternmost province of the island, in addition to the images Images in Ban of Hindu deities, there are several other remarkable and. The whole area of the tank, when I visited it, was a sheet of beautiful rice cultivation, and almost surrounded by a noble forest of teak. On the right side of this enclosure, and a few yards elevated, was the tomb of the princess and her nurse; the tomb is in the Maho metan style, and has on it, in ancient Javanese characters, the date 1320, perfectly distinct and in relief. I observed near the former site of Majapáhi two images of Ganésa and several other mutilated deities of Hindu mythology.
In the garden of the residence on that station are arranged several very beautiful subjects in stone, brought in from different parts of the country. Most of them were found at different times near the ruins of the temples and preserved in the families of the petty chiefs. A variety of bells, tripods, and ornaments of various descriptions, occur in casts of metal, and form part of the collection brought to England.
The inscriptions engraved on stone, and in characters no longer known to the people of the country, are innumerable: similar inscriptions engraved on copper have also been found in certain districts. Wilkins as an ancient form of the Devanágari, probably used on the continent of India about eight or nine centuries ago. No date can be discovered, nor any name that could give a clue as to the object or origin of the inscription.
Some of the characters and signs were found, after strict examination, to be on the same principle as the Javanese. But the inscriptions of the last of these classes are the most numerous, the most executed, in the highest state of preservation, and, as they admit of translation, are of perhaps higher interest than the others. Fac-similes of all these have been brought to England, and some have been.
