The population of this study consisted of the fifth students of the English Department of the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar academic year 2016/2017. When collecting data, the researcher asked students to identify the collocation they encountered while reading the narrative passage.

Collocation is one of the most important aspects of knowing a word. That is, to deepen the understanding of a word, students of English need to know its collocation (Mccharty, 2005:3). Therefore, the researcher is interested to find out how the students are able to identify collocation in narrative text in the fifth semester of the Department of English of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Based on the background of the above research, the researcher has a question that reads as follows: “How is the student's ability to identify collocation on narrative text in fifth semester students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar? ”.

The purpose of the study was to find out the students' ability to identify collocation on narrative text of fifth semester students of English department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The institution wants to know how far the student's ability to identify collocation on narrative text. By knowing the actual state of the students' abilities, the institution is able to take a good response and a positive action to solve or improve the learning process.

The scope of the study was the students' ability to identify collocation on narrative text of fifth semester students at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Since the time is very limited, the researcher uses the text document in this case narrative text to obtain the data source and students' performance. This study analyzes the actual state of students in identifying collocation on narrative text given to students.

Mutual information is a symmetrical, non-negative measure of the common information in the two variables. Meyers argues that stories are one of the most powerful ways to communicate with others. In this case, the researcher used such a test to obtain the subject matter data.

The indicator of this research was students' ability to identify collocation, both grammatical and lexical collocation, especially on narrative text. The total population of this research was 340 students which are clearly described in the following table:. This chapter discusses the findings and discussion of the results of the data analysis.

To find out the ability of the students in test, the raw score of the students was tabulated. It can be concluded that the ability of the students in article was less, which is shown the total average score 43 (see appendix). Based on the result calculation above, it can be interjected that the performance of the fifth semester students at the English department Makassar Muhammadiyah University in the identification was fair.

This can be proven from the result of the average score of students was 43 where this score was classified as fair. The test was used to find out the students' ability of the fifth semester students in identifying collocations at the English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University. In total, the students can identify 603 collocations out of 1360 collocations. The rate percentage based on the test showed that there were 3 students (9%) got good, 15 students (44%) got fair and 17 students (47%) got less.

This chapter presents the conclusion and proposal based on the results and discussion of the data analysis. Sample quantity refers to L.R. suggests that 10% sample for the large population and 20% sample for the small population. The research finding was presented with the test analysis while the discussion part was about the interpretation and explanation of the finding. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

After tabulating the raw score, the scribe determined each student's score and its classification. There are three passes in the test. The first pass consists of 12 collocations where the correct answer was 151 and the average score was 37. The second pass consists of 13 collocations where the correct answer was from 175 students and the average score was 39 or 22%. .

From Figure 4.1 above, it can be seen that among the 34 students, there is no student who is rated as excellent. Table 4.2 above showed that 603 items were the correct answer in identifying collocations on the narrative text. There were 151 correct answers for the first passage, 175 correct answers for the second passage, and 277 correct answers for the third passage.
