- The Scope of the Study
To solve the speaking problem, the researcher uses a discovery learning method to improve the speaking skills of the students. The researcher hopes that the application of Discovery Learning will attract students' interest and stimulate them to enjoy and actively speak English at Junior High School. Based on the statement above, this study limits the discussion by stating the research question as follows “Does the use of Discovery Learning improve the students' accuracy in speaking at SMPN 28 Kepulauan Selayar?. Based on the problem statements above, the aim of the research is to find out whether the use of Discovery Learning improves the students' speaking accuracy at SMPN 28 Kepulauan Selayar?
The benefits to the researcher were that the researcher got some information regarding the improvement of the student's speaking through the use. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The Concept of Speaking
Speaking is the ability to utter the articulation of sounds or words to express, indicate and deliver thoughts, ideas and feelings. Harmer (2011) defines speaking ability as the ability to speak fluently provided not only knowledge of linguistic features, but also It requires the ability to cooperate in dealing with turns of speech and non-verbal language.
At one end of a continuum of types of speaking performance is the ability to simply parrot (mimic) a word or phrase or possibly a sentence. Although this is a purely phonetic level of oral production, a number of prosodic, lexical and grammatical features of language can be inferred in the criterion performance. A second type of speaking frequently used in assessment contexts is the production of short pieces of spoken language designed to demonstrate competence in a close bond of grammatical, phrasal, lexical or phonological relationships (such as prosodic element intonation, stress, rhythm, timing) .
Maybin (2010:11) said that grammar in linguistics is used in two broad senses: first, it refers to an aspect of language structure (either language as a skill or the structure of a particular language, e.g. the grammar of English). Mastering speaking skills in English is a priority for many second and foreign language learners.
The Concept of Discovery Learning
From several definitions above, the author concludes that discovery learning is a kind of method in which students discover the material on their own without being taught by a teacher. Discovery learning emphasizes the process rather than the end product, thereby encouraging mastery and application. Ilahi says that "creativity is a process that takes place in experiences that bring revision of the situation and development of the self." This means that discovery learning has a positive effect on students.
Ilahi says that "the purpose of discovery learning is to have the experience directly align with the learning strategy being offered." This means that discovery learning involves the mentality and the physical directly to get a result of the conclusion being discussed. Therefore, students gain experience in the teaching learning process by using this discovery learning method. Ilahi says that "rational and critical thinking is a behavioral manifestation that relates to problem solving." This means that the ability to think can become the first asset in the development of their logic to understand the thought of the problems.
Ilahi says that "teaching discovery learning is complex, requiring active thinking, but in reality it is rare to require all physical activity." This means that the discovery learning method can change students for the better in their learning process. Ilahi says that "discovery learning is learning to solve problems." This means that using the discovery method of learning.
Conceptual Framework
H0 (Null Hypothesis): There was no improvement from Discovery Learning in students' accuracy in speaking skill at SMPN 28 Kepulauan Selayar. HI (Alternative Hypothesis): There was an improvement from Discovery Learning in students' accuracy in speaking skill at SMPN 28 Kepulauan Selayar. The researcher used pre-experimental design because the researcher wants to measure students' progress in speaking using Discovery Learning.
Therefore, in this study, the researcher uses only one group or class to use a pre-test and post-test design to know the result of the treatment. The single-group pretest-posttest design used by the investigator usually involves three steps: (a) administering a pretest that measures the dependent variable; (b) applying the experimental treatment X to the subjects; (c) conducting a post-test, again measuring the dependent variable. Differences attributed to the application of the experimental treatment are then evaluated by comparing the pretest and posttest score.
In this study, the researcher wanted to find the improvement of students' speaking ability by using Discovery Learning. The improvement was known after finding out the significant difference between the performance of the students before teaching using Discovery Learning and after teaching using Discovery Learning comparing pre-test and post-test scores.
