THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN RENDERING THE IDIOMATIC

EXPRESSIONS IN THE INDONESIAN VERSION OF “THE GREAT GATSBY”

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the idiomatic expressions of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and its Indonesian version translated by Sri Noor Verawaty. The researcher focuses on identifying the types of idioms in the novel and analyzing the idiom translation strategies used by the translator. Idiom is a figure of speech which has an implied message which cannot be interpreted literally. The research findings of the types of idioms based on Fernando’s theory (1996) show that pure idiom is the most common type found in The Great Gatsby. As for the idiom translation strategies, according to the theory proposed by Baker (2018), the most widely used strategy by the translator in rendering the idioms is translation by paraphrase. Translation by paraphrase is found to dominate in almost all types of the idioms because it is an effective choice when the translator does not find an appropriate idiom in the target language and so that the message in the idiom can be accepted by the target reader.

Keywords: idiom, The Great Gatsby, translation strategies
