TWO NEW VIOLETS FROM THE EASTERN UNITED
STATES.*

Stem
simple, erect, 8-L5cm. high, from a short horizontal or ascend- ing knotted rootstock emittingnumerous
long, thick fibrous roots;leaves, 3 to5, usually4, borneatthe
summitof
the stem; bladesglabrate, ovate-lanceolateorhastate-lanceolate,with atruncate baseand
acute apex, the margins repand-denticulate; stipules ovate,membranaceous:
petiole 1-L5 cm. long, appreciably shorter than the blade; flowers on filiform peduncles exceeding the leaves; sepals irregular, fromlinear- ovateto linear; corollayellow,

type sheet is a remark- ably full one, bearing twelveindividualsofuniformsizeand
characters except that the rootstockof oneoftheseproducestwo

The
publicationof thisspeciesistheresvilt of a critical study of the violets belonging to the hastata group in the South, whereinmy own
fieldobservationshave been supplemented by information kindly given
me
by othercollectors. Formany
years Elliott's V. triimrtitawas
re-gardedasa varietyof V.Iiantata, althoughthemostsuperficialexamina- tion ofthe rootstockinthe
two
species ought to have dispelledsuchan
opinion. Yet even after Dr. Smallhad
demonstratedthischaracteritwas
noticeabletosouthernbotanistsat leastthat certain formsremainedwhich
could not wellbedisposed of in connection with either of these species.More
recentlyMr.Roland
M. Harper* attempted to solve the difficultyby
thereinstatementofGingins' V. hastata glaberrima\,which
hetreatedasanentireleaved variety of tripartita, remarking in this connection: "It differsfrom
typical tripartita in havingleavesallun- dividedand
glabrous, butisinother respectsverysimilar. It seems to extend farther south than the type, and is the plantwhich was
taken for V. hastata in Florida."But
Mr.Harper
has here fallen intothe verynaturalerror ofplacinginasinglecategoryallthe plants with un- dividedleaves, regardlessofrange,and
hisstatementin the concluding portionofabove quoted paragraphisalsoatrifletoo broad.While much
of the material referred by Dr.
Chapman
to V. hastata glaherrimahas nothingincommon
withhastata,thelatterspeciesdoes,notwithstanding, occurin Florida, asisabundantly proven by excellent specimens inthe Biltmore Herbarium, collectedinLiberty County.A mere
glance at the whitish, succulent, tuberousrootstockis sufficient to establish the identityof this species.Letus
now examine
therangeofthedubious forms under considera- tion.The
typeof V. tripartitacame
from Athens, Georgia, and the specieshasbeen collected thereby many
differentpersons sinceElliott's day, sothatwe
have nodifficulty inestablishing apositive diagnosis ofits'characters.
North
of thispointitranges through themountainsof Northand
South Carolina and eastern Tennessee, beingcommon
near Biltmore, N.C, where
I have carefully studiedit.Throughout
this range,and
nearlyalwaysassociatedwith the typical form, asshown by
notesoncollector's labels, is aplantof almost identical appearance, ex- cept that the leavesareundivided and haveatendencytobecome
glabrous withage. Thisisthe true glaberrima,which may
wellstandasa variety of tripartita,where
ithas beenplacedby
Mr. Harper.If
now we examine
the collections from southofAthens,we
findan entire-leaved yellow-flowered violet represented in abundance, but no tripartita. Itisthisplantwhich was
familiartoDr.Chapman
inFlorida, andwhich
Mr.Harper
hasconfused withthemore
northerly form. V.tripartita anditsvariety are relativelytall, coarseplants, evenat flower- ing time, havingflowerswiththecorolla distinctlyveined,
and
withrather broadsepals. Thisvioletisveryslender, of remarkably uniform size, withsmallerflowers, quiteimmaculate

gesting thoseof hastata, whilethe leavesof tripartita glaherriniavesBvahle
rather those of V. scabriuscula in shape. This species, which

havedescribedaboveunderthe
name
tenuipes,isof southern range ex- clusively.From
the truehastata,which
alsooccursinFlorida, itmay
bedistinguishedbythe rootstock,
which
isofthesame

Acaulescent, tufted, from ashort, thick
and
nearlyvertical caudex:scapes
and
foliage finely puberulent; leaf-blades oblongorovate-oblong outline, in the earliest 1.5-2 cm., the latter 3-4 cm. long; themargins coarsely crenate,frequently incised atbase with oneormore

speciesbelongstothe coastal plain region, its afBnities being with V. Brittoniana, withwhich
itisfound growing. Miss Mul- fordwas
thefirsttodetectthe obvious differences in both flowersand
foliage,
