  • Scope of the Research

The quality of the students' learning process is determined by how well they understand the material taught. Basically, creating an effective learning environment is the best way to support students' learning process. This step can ultimately create an effective learning condition that can support the students' learning process.

The complexity of learning has also become a major problem for students in the Department of English at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, including learning reported speech. Miranti (2020) stated in her finding that the greatest complexity in the students' reports was in constructing the verb form. Furthermore, Qodariah (2010) states that the internal factors are from the students' affective, cognitive and psychomotor aspects, while the external factors are from their family, social and school factors.

But the reason for the students' complexity at the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar had not been well discovered. Because of that thing, the researcher wanted to find out more about the problem through the research "The students' complexities in learning reported speech (A Descriptive Study at the fifth semester students at English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar)".

Some Basic Concepts

Richards and Schmidt say that Grammar is a description of the structure of a language and how linguistic units such as words and phrases are formed into sentences. First, grammar is a description of the syntax of a language, and second is a set of rules or recipes for how to use the language. The elements of a language and the rules for organizing these elements into a meaningful unit are always grammar, according to the definitions given above.

Linguistic/grammatical competence: Based on this view, Grammar refers to a speaker's understanding of the everyday structure of a language. EFL Grammar: A non-native speaker of a language who learns it will be able to understand its grammar. When a person wants to report what someone else said or thought, or what oneself said or thought on a previous occasion, one has two options: either give the exact words, or give a summary of what was said or thought. : direct speech, or adapt the words to the situation where they are new quoted: indirect speech.

It can be done by modifying the pronouns, tenses, adverbs and other words as needed in the speaker's sentence or the thought part of his sentence, using a conjunction (eg that) and changing the pronouns, tenses, adverbs and other words as necessary. In reported speech, tenses, word order, pronouns and other words may be different from those in the original sentence. The main rule of reported speech, according to the table above, is that a sentence must consist of the complete complement used by other speakers in repeating words from other speakers.

According to Maclin (2001, p.296), typical transformations in pronouns and possessive adjectives are shown in the table below. According to Sinclair (1990), the expression "to" must be included after the supporting clause to construct recorded speech in the statement type. He also claims that if the reporting verb is in the past tense, the tense, pronouns, and adverbs in the reported sentence must be transformed.

The tenses of the recorded sentence do not need to be transformed if the reporting verb is in the present tense, but the pronoun needs to be modified. The verb 'said' in Roni and Dedi's said to Rosi suggests that the reporting verb is in the simple past tense. In other words, learning complexity can be described as a situation in the learning process that is characterized by a specific barrier to learning performance.

This interview was in terms of the complexities they faced in learning Reported Speech. Based on the response of the students, there were 3 main complexities students encountered in learning Reported Speech. Based on student responses, 7 out of 10 or 70% of students said that their social environment influenced their motivation to learn the report. Thus, it was found that this factor also caused students' complexity in learning reported speech. The researcher found that all three of the main obstacles students encountered while learning reported speech in their class were grammar.

Moreover, these students' interest in learning Reported Speech was also influenced by their mood state. In addition, the interview revealed other factors that determine students' complexity in learning Reported Speech. Moreover, the teaching method used by the teacher in the classroom was also the other cause of students' complexity in learning Reported Speech.

From the interview, the researcher collected several suggestions from students to solve the problem of students' complexity in learning reported speech. Moreover, they also need to provide moral support to increase students' motivation in learning, especially in learning reported speech. Students perceived that the facilities in their grammar class and the teachers' teaching method did not support their learning process, especially in the learning of reported speech.
