The main purpose of this research is to describe how the suspense of plot is built in The Maze Runner novel by James Dashner. This research analyzes the sense of tension of the plot in The Maze Runner novel by James Dashner.

Theoretical Use

Based on the explanation above, the urgency of the author to do this research is to describe the tension of the plot built in the novel. Regarding the research question above, the purpose of this research is to describe the tension of plot built in The Maze Runner novel.

Practical Use

For a proper analysis, the writer needs to review some previous studies. The first previous study is the research conducted by Nurul Amalia Darwis (2014) in her thesis “Plot Tension in Alana Matthews' Novel “Waterford Point”, the writer discusses the Plot Tension in Alana Matthew's Novel “Waterford Point”. Another previous study is the research done by Dani irawan (2015) in his thesis “Structural Analysis of Plot in Rick Riordan's “Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” the writer discusses the analysis of Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Thief Lightning Thief written by Rick Riordan using Greimas structuralism.

From the previous study, the writer got a lot of input, the writer got information that created suspense, pushing the outcome of the story. In addition, the writer also received information about can be evoked even when readers know how the story will end. Based on the previous studies above that the previously mentioned researcher are different with the writer's research.

Structuralism Approach

The results showed that suspense can be evoked even when readers know how the story will end. The process of suspense consists of the beginning of the event that leads the reader into the story and the foreshadowing that produces the reader's heightened emotions or generates suspense through allusions in the story. In this research the writer uses the Maze Runner Novel as a source of data to analyze and the writer's focus is on the process of suspense that is built in the novel.

These relationships constitute a structure, and behind the local variations of surface phenomena, there are continuous laws of abstract culture. Understanding the definition above and related to the title of this research Plot Suspension in the Novel Maze Runner by James Dashner, the structuralism approach will be used to analyze the plot suspension through the novel. So the writer hopes that the approach can help the writer analyze the formulation of the main problem that stated how the suspense is built in the novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner.

Structural Affect Theory

Nayar (2010) states that structuralism is the belief that the word is organized as a structure and has connections of each unit.

Plot and Suspense

Elements of Plot

Conflict is a clash of actions, desires, ideas or goals in the plot of a story or drama. Conflict is crucial to the development of the plot because this is where the author gives or places a problem in the story. Climax, a Greek term meaning "ladder," is that specific point in a story at which the conflict or tension reaches its highest point.

It is a defining moment or turning point in a story where the rising action becomes a falling action. A climax is thus the point at which a conflict or crisis reaches its peak and then calls for a resolution or resolution. However, Perrine (1988) says that plot is a series of incidents or events that a story consists of, in other words, plot is a series of events in the story.

Suspense

Definition of Suspense

Events make a story or movie interesting because each event has its own settings and interests. Conflict can exist between the main character and other person or persons (man again man), between the main character and some external force physical nature society, or fate (man against some destructive element in his own nature (man again himself) (Perrine. Potter (as cited in Novania, 2010) states that the plot can be divided into five structures consisting of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and conclusion.

The function of suspense is to keep a reader in constant interest, feelings of excitement and anxiety. Based on the explanation above, the author concludes that suspense is an emotion can make the readers/someone feel anxious or can make someone curious what will happen and guest for the next part. Feeling suspense also makes someone know what will happen and guess the next event. Especially in literary stories like a novel, the readers will keep reading the novel and interested when the main character has a conflict or the novel has many mysteries that will make the readers curious until you know the end of the story.

The Process of Suspense

In addition, according to Brewer and Linchtenstein in Bae and Young (2009) emotions based on the reader's cognitive responses (eg, suspense, curiosity, and surprise) give readers attention, contributing to readers' enjoyment of the story. For suspense, in Structural Impact Theory, an outcome event is delayed until the last moment so that the reader is uncertain about the important outcome of the story. To create surprise, some important explanatory information is withheld from the reader until a surprising event occurs, which creates a knowledge gap between the reader and certain characters in the story.

In this discourse structure, surprise is induced due to the omission of essential narrative information without the reader's awareness. According to Sutherland (2009), foreshadowing is giving the reader something to anticipate. Foreshadowing occurs when writers insert hints and hints of events or situations that will apparently come later in the story. Foreshadowing can have several functions because they prepare the way and create suspense by arousing the reader's anticipation.

Kinds of Suspense

Hidden Suspense

By appearing in the text before the events and situations they predict, they provide a foundation that lends credibility to the events and situations in which they occur.

Macro Suspense

Descriptive qualitative method is a process used to describe data in the form of observable written or spoken words of people or actors in a novel (Glass & Hopkins, 1984: 160).

Data and Data Source

Primary Data Source

Secondary Data Source

The quote above indicates as an initiating event where the readers wonder about the next story. The situation creates the uncertainty and anxiety of the readers about the tours and leads the readers to continue following the story. When the elevator arrives and the doors open, Newt looks inside and announces, "It's a girl." The girl suddenly.

In a hollow and anguished voice, she says, “Everything is going to change.” She then hands Newt a note, which he reads aloud: “She's the last. It piques the readers' curiosity when Alby shoots Ben and goes to kill him. Therefore, the situation creates uncertainty and anxiety among the readers, wondering: “What wakes up the girl.

The above quotes show suspense because it arouses the curiosity of the readers when Teresa said "Labyrinth is a code". Can they be safe?” readers are curious about the next story and it makes the readers to continue reading the story.

Data Collecting Technique

Data Analyzing Technique

According to Brewer and Linchtenstein in Bae and Young (2009), emotions based on the reader's cognitive responses (eg, excitement, curiosity, and surprise) provide readers with attention, which contributes to readers' satisfaction with the story, this quote shows. tension because it arouses the readers' curiosity. It prompts the reader to continue reading the story and the situation creates the uncertainty and anxiety of the readers that perhaps makes the readers ask "what is evil. The event when Minho tells about the dead Griever arouses curiosity, creates uncertainty and anxiety of the readers before for the next action to come. It arouses readers' curiosity when Thomas's reaction chooses to enter the Maze to save others, according to Brewer and Linchtenstein in Bae and Young (2009) emotions based on the reader's cognitive responses (e.g. ., suspense, curiosity, and.

The quote above shows that even generating suspense by creating tension and produces the emotions of the readers. Readers anticipate predicting at the allusion to climbing the wall that prompts readers. This initiatory event prompts readers to wonder what will happen next after the Grievers die and piques readers' curiosity.

Climax

There is a sense of anticipation or concern that the author instills in the readers and it leads the readers to follow the next story to know about the significant outcome. Therefore, the situation creates uncertainty and anxiety among the readers, who wonder, "Can they jump over the cliff?" Therefore, there is a sense of anticipation or concern that the author instills in the readers and it leads the readers to follow the next story to know about the significant outcome.

The process of suspense consists of initiating events that lead the readers into the story and foreshadowing that produced the readers' emotions with heightens or generates suspense through hints in the story.
