Scope of the Research

Previous Related Research Findings

Catalán, (2003) has researched “Sex differences in vocabulary learning strategy in T2 at the Catalan University of Larioja, Spain”. Jimenez (2013) found that women made better use of formal control strategies, input elicitation strategies, rehearsal and planning strategies, while men made better use of picture vocabulary learning strategy. Wei (2016) researched “Gender Differences in the Use of English Vocabulary Learning Strategies in Chinese Secondary Schools”.

Meanwhile, previous research only observed formal rule strategies, input elicitation strategies, rehearsal and planning strategies, while males were more likely to use picture vocabulary learning strategies.

Some Pertinent Ideas

  • Definition of Vocabulary
  • Kinds of Vocabulary
  • Aspect of Vocabulary
  • The importance of Learning Vocabulary

This shows that studying vocabulary is essential to mastering the English language; without vocabulary, it is difficult to master the language competently. Second, print vocabularies consist of words whose meaning is intuitive, regardless of whether we write or read quietly. A productive vocabulary is the collection of words available to a person while writing or speaking.

Meanwhile, vocabulary growth is critical to language development; vocabulary is critical in teaching English because without a .

Learning Strategy

  • Definition of Vocabulary Learning Strategy
  • Kinds of Vocabulary Learning Strategy
  • Gender and Language
  • Male and Female in Vocabulary Learning Strategy

According to the above reasoning, in this research it is thought that individuals cannot acquire all English skills without first knowing the vocabulary of the language, as vocabulary is the basic component of the language. According to Nation, vocabulary learning techniques are a subset of language learning strategies, which are subsets of general learning strategies. Another explanation put forward by Puspitawati, (2013) vocabulary learning methods are defined as a collection of learning approaches or behaviors that language learners use to find the meaning of new words, to retain knowledge of new words learned and to increase their vocabulary.

Every language learner has their own approach to vocabulary acquisition, and vocabulary learning strategies will also vary considerably depending on whether the language learner's primary goal is understanding the language or communicating effectively. According to the above explanation, vocabulary learning strategies are any set of actions, plans, tactics, thoughts, or behaviors that language learners use to aid in understanding, storing, retrieving, and using information. In other words, vocabulary learning strategies are the means by which language learners learn vocabulary.

According to Oxford (2003), the taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) is divided into two groups: direct strategies (including: memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensatory strategies) and indirect strategies (including: metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, social strategies). According to Richards (2000:3), students must first feel that they are learning vocabulary before they can successfully take personal vocabulary notes in class. Based on the characteristics of all three major categories of vocabulary learning strategies, it is reasonable to assume that the strategies for vocabulary learning proposed by Nation (2001) include both cognitive and metacognitive strategies, as both categories have a wide range of strategies of varying complexity.

According to Weatherall (2015), gender is related to linguistic variance, including differences in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and communication style. According to Uster (2008), there are several elements that influence the language learning process; both biological and social factors, as well as. According to the data, 36% of girls and 24% of men have completed three or more years of education in a foreign language.

According to the explanation above, the research wishes to conclude that male and female students have distinct language acquisition strategies.

Data Analysis

According to Boyce, an in-depth interview is a qualitative research technique that involves conducting extensive individual interviews with a small number of respondents in order to elicit their views on a certain idea, program or issue. Finally, in this research the interview was summarized as the outcome of the research, which was previously transcribed.

Indicator of the Research

This chapter deals with the results of the research, divided into two selections: research results and discussion between male and female students.

Findings

Learning Strategies Used by Students

Students usually use memorization, repetition, and questioning strategies to overcome their difficulties in learning vocabulary.

DISCUSSION

Learning Strategies Used by Male and Female Students

Based on the table above, there are significant differences between the strategy of females and males to improve English vocabulary. The research result supported by the theory of Schmitt (2011), vocabulary learning strategies and classifies vocabulary learning strategies into five groups: definition strategies, social strategies, memory strategies, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies. Based on the research result that female students sometimes predict the words from books or article to know students' vocabulary, this strategy is called as determination strategy based on Schmitt's Taxonomy of Vocabulary Learning Strategies (Smchmit, 2011).

In addition, students sometimes used social strategies, such as asking friends to know the meaning of words. The result of Jimenez's research, corresponding to this research, shows that female students have more strategies to acquire English vocabulary. This theory is consistent with the result of the study that male and female students used memorization strategies to master English vocabulary.

Research result males tend to use social strategies, while females tend to use cognitive strategies to improve vocabulary. The male students always applied the word in spoken language and the result of the research revealed that the score of the female students was higher than the male students. The antecedents of the study are not suitable with the result of the study because in this study only the learning strategies used by male and female students in mastering English vocabulary are shown.

Therefore, there are significant differences between female and male strategy to improve English vocabulary. On the other hand, there are also the same strategies that students use to improve English vocabulary, namely editing books and repeating new words.

Suggestions

Based on the findings, the conclusion regarding the classification of strategies, this research used Schmitt's theory vocabulary learning strategies. The vocabulary learning strategies for men, the strategies are (1) Watch movies, (2) Listen to music, Podcasts, YouTube, (3) Play games. Meanwhile, the vocabulary learning strategies for women are (1) Memorization, (2) Read books, journals, articles, (3) Practice speaking alone at the mirror, (4) Grouping of discussion.

Based on the results of the research and the discussion in the previous chapter, this research found that male and female students usually use the cognitive strategy as the dominant strategy to improve their vocabulary, while the assertiveness strategy became the least of the strategies used to master the vocabulary by seventh grade students. . Mts Ma‟ Arif Banyorang. The role of the English teacher in improving the students' vocabulary is very necessary to make it easier for the students to understand the material that the teacher gives to the students and to make it easier for the students to use it in speaking, writing and reading. The researcher hopes that future research interested in conducting similar research will contribute to a better understanding of the differences in vocabulary mastery that students have and can be complemented by the strategies that teachers use in the teaching process.
