INTRODUCTION

Problem Statement

Mengingat hal tersebut, penulis memutuskan untuk menggunakan Ular Tangga sebagai media pembelajaran di SLB Negeri 1 Pinrang. Research Question

Objectives and Significance of the Research

Scope of the Research

The scope of this research is the use of Snakes and Ladders as English teaching materials for mentally retarded students. The limitation of use here is the procedure for using Snakes and Ladders as teaching materials for mentally challenged students. In this research; the researcher analyzes the procedure of Snakes and Ladders as teaching media for the mentally challenged in teaching English.

The scope of the research will be limited to teaching vocabulary through Snakes and Ladders, that is under the applied language discipline. By discipline, this research will limit teaching to the field of applied daily activity, which speaks of the teaching subjects in the form of communication. The researcher will provide vocabulary about daily activities and the author was played Snakes and Ladders with the students.

According to the activity, the writer explained to the students the speaking activity, Snakes and Ladders as a teaching strategy. The object of this research will be students with mental retardation in the second year of SLB Negeri 1 Pinrang.

Again, the purpose of learning vocabulary is for students to understand the meaning of words. So, this is done to make it easier to remember the meaning of the words. It is impossible for students to write and speak a foreign language without having sufficient knowledge of vocabulary.

In this case, the game is one of the techniques that can be used to help the students learn vocabulary in a pleasant way. In Indonesia, snake learning is one of the traditional games that can be played in pairs or groups. If they stop at the bottom of the ladder, they go up to the top of the ladder.

If they stop at the head of the snake, they go down to the tip of the tail. When they stop at one of the squares, they must say the name of the profession. If they stop at the bottom of the ladder, they must go up to the top of the ladder.

In the game Snakes and Ladders, there are many types of vocabulary contained, but it depends on the types of the board.

Instruments of the Research

Procedure of Collecting Data

During the first meeting, the writer introduced the vocabulary description using language used that the students understand or sign language. And while the writer was explaining, the writer also gave examples of the vocabulary they use every day in their daily activities or simple vocabulary to the students. The writer then gave the students the opportunity to name one easy word for each student.

Then, the writer presented the Snakes and Ladders game to the students and explained how it should be played. The second meeting the writer played Snakes and Ladders with the students and they played according to the rule the writer explained earlier. Students took words from the game and used their word to make a sentence according to their daily activity.

The eight, the author instructed the students to speak in front of their friends using their words in the game. After giving the treatment, the students gave a set of vocabulary test to know the students' ability, the vocabulary test aimed at the students to build the sentence using the words from the snakes and ladders. The students played the game Snakes and Ladders and whichever word they get, they make a sentence with their own words.

The result of pre-test and post-test is calculated to measure whether the students remember the vocabulary or not. In this research, the author used post-test using 100 words and the students were made sentences from the following words:.

Discussion

The students were very happy when the writer told them that the learning medium used was Snakes and Ladders game. Finally, the writer gives a post test to the students to describe the students' ability after learning vocabulary using Snakes and Ladders game. This can be seen in the students' ability to interpret the vocabulary acquired in the Snakes and Ladders game.

Uses the game Snakes and Ladders as English teaching material for mentally challenged students who can improve their English vocabulary at SLB (Sekolah Luar Biasa) Negeri 1 Pinrang. The writer decided to use the game Snakes and Ladders as a medium to help students improve vocabulary. It means that the student's vocabulary improves after giving the treatment by using the Snakes and Ladders game.

It means that students were very good response in teaching and learning English vocabulary by using Snakes and Ladders game. So the writer concludes that the students had positive or very good response to the use of Snakes and Ladders game as an English teaching medium for mentally retarded students to improve their English. It showed that the students enjoy the lesson if the author used Snakes and Ladders game as an English teaching medium.

It means that the students gave very good response in teaching English vocabulary using Snakes and Ladders game. Then the writer gave them an instruction and example of how to play the game Snakes and Ladders as an English teaching tool. After giving them an instruction, the writer gave them an assignment using the game Snakes and Ladders.

By using the Snakes and Ladders game, the mentally challenged students were happy, enthusiastic and more motivated to learn English. There were advantages to using the game Snakes and Ladders as an English teaching tool for intellectually disabled students. I started to feel confident in speaking English after learning the vocabulary with the game Snakes and Ladders.

Research Instrument

Lesson Plan

The researcher will explain to the student what the students have learned through the Snakes and Ladders game. The researcher will introduce the game Snakes and Ladders to help memorizing the vocabulary. The researcher will clarify and explain what the students have in playing Snakes and Ladders.

The researcher will inform the students about what they want to do next and still provide motivation to learn. The researcher will explain and correct the students' problem errors in remembering the meaning of vocabulary.
