GENERAL INFORMA TION
The entire hospital is staffed by employees from the teaching faculty at the School of Medicine. This lecture is held under the auspices of the faculty at the School of Medicine. These meetings are open to students of the school and to the medical profession of the community.
ADMISSION
The Medical College Admission Test must be taken in the year prior to applying for admission to the School of Medicine. This test is given under the auspices of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is required of applicants to Vanderbilt. The study report, together with the recommendations and score obtained on this exam, will be used by the admissions committee in reviewing applications for admission to the School of Medicine.
Applications for admission may be submitted approximately one year prior to the entry date, at which time the Admissions Committee begins reviewing applicants. Applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee and a final decision on acceptance or rejection can be made at any time. This deposit is credited for the payment of the first tuition and in case the student does not matriculate, it is not returned.
Application forms may be obtained by applying to the Registrar, School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Nashville 5, Tennessee. Applications for advanced status must be submitted in accordance with the procedure outlined for admission to the freshman class, with acceptable applicants paying the same deposit of $50. '\plicancs must provide acceptable proof of having completed the conditions of admission and of having satisfactorily completed in an accredited. All members of the freshman class and all students transferring from other institutions must undergo a thorough physical examination within two weeks of the date of admission.
Facilities in the Student Health Service are available to any student who feels indisposed in any way.
REGULATIONS
They must have spent at least four years studying as matriculated medical students, unless this requirement is waived at the school's discretion by proof of having satisfactorily completed the corresponding studies. They must have satisfactorily completed all required courses in the medical curriculum, passed all prescribed examinations and be free of debt to the University. At the end of 4. year, every student who has fulfilled these requirements will be nominated for the doctorate.
Students engaged in outside work must report such activity at the beginning of the school year or any time during the school year that such work is undertaken. This medal is awarded to the student in the graduating class of each School of the University who has achieved the highest average standing in scholarship during the four consecutive years of study. A chapter of this medical honor society was established by charter in the School of Medicine in I~}2-3. Not more than one-fifth of the students of the fourth-year class are eligible for membership and only one-half of the number of eligible students may be elected to membership during the latter half of their third year.
Beauchamp in memory of her husband who was for many years superintendent of the Central State Hospital in Nashville, is awarded to the Student who shows the greatest progress in neurology and psychiatry and who is otherwise worthy and meritorious. This award, established in 1945 by the Borden Company Foundation, Inc. established, provides $500 annually to the person in the graduating class of the School of Medicine who has conducted the most meritorious undergraduate research during any year while enrolled in the School. in the medical field. Candidates for the award must apply for consideration to the Dean of the School of Medicine.
The author of the first place paper will be awarded $100 and the author of the second place paper.
EXPENSES
All students are required to provide themselves with hemocytometers, hemoglobinometers and ophthalmoscopes before the beginning of the second quarter of the second year. For information on scholarships, work grants and loan funds available to medical students, please contact the Dean of the School of Medicine. The university believes that the provision of good housing and sufficient supervision will enable the individual student to grow and develop his potential as an individual and as a citizen.
Male rooms may be reserved by application to the Office of the Director of Student Housing; rooms for women, by application to the Dean of Women's office. A refund of the room reservation deposit will be considered if the reason for the request is assessed. Premises may be occupied the day before the opening of the semester and up to and including the last day of the semester.
The occupant is responsible for the condition of the furniture and room and is charged for all damages. All rent is payable in advance throughout the semester at the office of the Bursar. The University reserves the right to require any occupant to vacate the apartment at any time and for any reason, after giving reasonable notice.
A list of rooms and apartments for rent near campus is maintained in the office of the Director of Student Housing.
PLAN OF INSTRUCTION
Students gain insight into the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship and the responsibilities inherent in this interpersonal relationship. Also during the fourth rearguard there will be a series of lectures on the relationship of medicine, medical practice and the doctor to society. The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine was one of the original medical schools to implement a military and disaster medicine program under the Medical Education for National Defense plan.
These courses are conducted under the supervision of the Director of Post Graduate Studies and the Head of the concerned department. Courses can be held at any time during the year for varying lengths of time. The costs of special and intensive courses are decided by the dean and the director of postgraduate studies in cooperation with the head of the department where the classes are held.
Candidates for the Master's degree or Doctor of Philosophy may pursue work in the medical sciences given at the School of Medicine, either in regular courses or in special electives, provided that such students are admitted by the relevant heads of department and are registered on the University's Ph.D. school. Master's work in the medical sciences is regulated by the faculty of the PhD school. Candidates for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology and Speech can pursue work in these fields in the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center and the School of Medicine.
Postgraduate work in this department is managed by the faculty of the Faculty of Medicine.
COURSES OF STUDY
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE: PRINCIPLES OFPUBLIC HEALTH ANDEPIDEMIOLOGY
- DIAGNOSTICTECHNIQUESIN AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH CORRECTION
Family members, when patients on the outpatient or inpatient service, are seen when possible by the student. Here the student is introduced to some of the methods of clinical psychological examination.. the focus is on projective techniques. An integrated course taught by members of the Departments of Surgery, Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology and Biochemistry.
The student is taught about the methods of physical examination of the abdomen, spine, joints and deformities. Third and fourth graders are expected to attend the weekly surgical clinic. For one quarter, one-third of fourth-year students serve daily as assistants in the surgical wards of Vanderbilt University Hospital.
Third grade students for a quarter serve every day as assistants in general surgery, orthopedic surgery and genitourinary surgery clinics. In this course, students are taught the theories and techniques of surgical wound treatment. This instruction is given by members of the urology staff in formal ward rounds on alternate Tuesdays to serving students.
Lectures and demonstrations designed to familiarize the student with the basic structure and function of the central nervous system.

Special study of research methods and current important research findings in the field of audiology. Special study of research methods and current important research findings in the field of speech science and experimental phonetics. A study of aphasic language disturbances with a consideration of the history of aphasia, normal and abnormal language function, perception and perceptual disturbances.
NOTE: In addition, coursesJ are offered in the special education division at George Peabody College and are available to the graduate student in the Division of Audiology and Speech at the completion of a sequence of study in his major or minor.
