GENERAL INFORMATION
The Faculty of Medicine building is located in the southeast corner of the University campus. The laboratories of the various departments of the Faculty of Medicine are grouped around two halls on the north side. The laboratories in these buildings are specially arranged for the use of the clinical departments of the school.
The power house is located on the west side of the campus, facing Twenty-fourth Avenue. The entire Hospital is staffed by members of the School of Medicine faculty. The Vanderbilt School of Medicine Library was founded in 1906 and was located in the School of Medicine building on South Campus.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
The Medical College Admission Test must be taken during the previous year for application for admission to the School of Medicine. This test is given under the auspices of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and is required of applicants to Vanderbilt. This deposit is credited towards the payment of the first tuition, and if the student does not matriculate, it is non-refundable.
Application forms may be obtained by applying to the Registrar, School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Nashville 5, Tennessee. Students who have satisfactorily completed the above course, and whose applications for admission to the School of Medicine have been officially approved, will be awarded 36 hours of credit toward the bachelor's degree upon completion of the first-year course in medicine. Students desiring information relating to this course should write to the Dean, College of Arts and Science, Vanderbilt University.
Applications for advanced training should be made in accordance with the procedure described for admission to the first-year class, and acceptable candidates must make the same deposit of ~O.
EXAMINATIONS AND PROMOTIONS
Applicants must provide acceptable evidence that they have completed the admission requirements and that they have satisfactorily completed all the work required of students of the class they wish to enter in an accredited medical school. Students will be notified when the Committee for Promotion considers their work to be of poor quality, thereby notifying them of the necessity of greater effort to carry the work of the School. Any student whose work or behavior indicates that he is unfit for the practice of medicine may, at the discretion of the Executive Faculty, be requested to withdraw from the school at any time. Any student who fails a course will normally be required to remove the failure before being allowed to enter the courses of the following academic year.
Such opportunities will be readily available in all departments and will be made by special arrangement. Candidates for the doctorate must have reached the age of 21 and be of good moral character. They must have passed all the required courses in the medical curriculum, have passed all prescribed examinations.
At the end of the fourth year, every student who meets the requirements will be recommended for the title of Doctor of Medicine.
FEES AND EXPENSES
All students are obliged to obtain hemocytometers, hemoglobinometers and ophthalmoscopes before the start of the second quarter of the second year. Students who withdraw from the University for any reason or are dismissed by the Faculty or required to withdraw after the beginning of the semester cannot claim and are not entitled to any refund or repayment of tuition, fees, room rent or other regular charges or assessments, The University will not be responsible for their return or refund.
LIVING ACCOMMODATIONS
Refund of the deposit for the room reservation will be considered if the cause of the request is judged to be beyond the applicant's control and if the written request is received before July 1. The rooms can be occupied the day before the date of the reservation. opening of the session and up to and including the last day of the semester. All rental fees must be paid in advance per installment at the Bursar's office.
West End-This residence, located on the southwest corner of campus, is available for medical student housing. A list of rooms and apartments located near the university is maintained in the dean's office for those who cannot be accommodated in university housing. A large number of the men enjoy the benefits of living together in these fraternity houses.
They meet the same standards of inspection required by the University's housing schemes.
HONORS AND AWARDS
The selection of the assignment is made by the dean or by a committee set up by him for this purpose. George Hunter Laboratory.-This laboratory for the study of infectious diseases was established as part of the Department of Medicine from funds provided by the Benwood Foundation, Inc., Chattanooga, Tennessee, in honor of Mr. Straus Foundation, Inc. - The foundation provides support for research in the Institute of Medicine within cardiovascular diseases.

Cobb Pilcher Memorial Lecture-In 1950, Pi Chapter of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity established the Cobb Pilcher Memorial Lecture to honor the memory of Dr. These meetings are open to the students of the School and to the medical profession of the community. VANDERBILT HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MEDICINE This society was organized by the class of 1953 for the purpose of promoting the exchange of information concerning events and personalities in the history of medicine and fostering an interest in it among the faculty and students of the School of Medicine. .

GENERAL PLAN OF INSTRUCTION
For this purpose, during his first year each student is assigned a family in the Outpatient Service, which he follows throughout his four years. This allows for direct observation of the family in its own environment and of the effect of illness on the family. Students are given an understanding of the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship and of the responsibilities inherent in this interpersonal relationship.
COURSES OFFERED TO DIPLOMA CANDIDATES Candidates registered for postgraduate studies at the University for the degree of Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy may follow the work in Medical Sciences given in the School of Medicine, either in regular courses or in special electives. provided that these students are accepted by the heads of the respective departments. Graduate work in Medical Sciences is regulated by the faculty of the University's Graduate School. Candidates for the Master of Science degree in Audiology and Speech-Language may pursue work in these fields at the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center and the School of Medicine.

AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH
You can get detailed instructions regarding the format of the thesis submission from the secretariat of the Faculty of Medicine. Students registering for non-credit thesis research will pay a fee of $50.00 per semester for thesis supervision and library use. Hearing Testing.-Study of various types of hearing tests with emphasis on audiometric measurements.
Anatomy and physiology of hearing. A study of the structure of the human ear and its abnormalities and diseases. The selection and use of hearing aids. - An examination of the research and theory of clinical hearing aid selection. Articulation and voice disorders. - An investigation into the etiology, diagnosis and clinical treatment of articulation defects and voice disorders.
A review of the significant research in the field of stuttering, with emphasis on etiologies and therapies.
POSTGRADUATE COURSES
Orga/lic Speech Disorders. - A study of the etiology, diagnosis and therapy of speech abnormalities due to cleft palate, cerebral palsy and other pathologies associated with brain injury and developmental malformations, including bulbar polio and speech after laryngectomy. Aphasia.-A study of aphasic language disorders with attention to the history of aphasia, normal and abnormal language function, perception, and perceptual disorders. Seminar in speech science. -Special study of research methods and current important research results in the field of speech science and experimental phonetics.
In addition, courses are offered in the special education division at George Peabody College and are available to the graduate student in the Division of Audiology and Speech at the completion of a sequence of study in his major or minor. Courses can be offered at any time during the year for periods of varying lengths. Fees for special and intensive courses are set by the dean and director of graduate studies in collaboration with the head of the department in which the course is taught.
