Emphasis on publishing as a means of "spreading knowledge" was expressed by the first secretary of the Smithsonian. Abundance was greater in the warmest, shallow, central part of the eddy than in the deeper, peripheral parts of the eddy. One such vortex occupied the dump during cruise 2, with its center just northeast of the dump (about 39°45'N, 71°55'W).
Eddy at the dump was arbitrarily divided into an eastern region in the core of the vortex and a western region in the periphery of the vortex (Figure 5). The amount of strained water per unit of time may have varied considerably due to fluctuations in ship speed and the amount of clogging of the net. Another factor affecting the quantitative reliability of the cruise 2 samples is the patchy distribution of T.
The base of the triangle encompasses the depth range sampled; the peak shows the duration of the drag and is read from the abscissa. If almost the entire vertical spectrum of the populations was sampled, as seems likely, it must be concluded. The greatest numbers of Themisto were taken in shallow tows, with the majority of specimens collected above 125 m. and 92% of specimens in the eastern and western eddies respectively being caught between 125 m and the surface.
Only a small part of the population lived below the isothermal layer of 15°-16°C; in the eastern gyre, 98% of nocturnal specimens were collected between 300 m and the surface. About 1/3 of the eastern Eddy Night samples (34%) occurred in the 0–25 m layer, above the isothermal layer. Outside the core, which lies in the eastern gyre, the anticyclonic motion of the water tends to deflect particles.
An opposing view, however, is that water is drawn into the outer edges of the vortex and is lost at the surface. It cannot be determined whether any of the above explanations were operative for Themisto abundance. Manuscripts intended for serial publication are subject to content review at the original Smithsonian museums or offices and are submitted to the Smithsonian Institution Press on Form SI-36 with approval of the appropriate museum authority. Review of manuscripts and works of art by the Press for requirements relating to the format and style of the series, the completeness and clarity of the copy and the arrangement of all material, as described below, are, in the judgment of the Press, determines the acceptance or rejection of the manuscripts and art. . The front matter (preceding the text) must contain the following: title page with only title and author and no other information, summary page with author/title/series/etc., according to the established format, table of contents with indents that reflect the main and structure of the paper.
The first page of the text should contain the title and author at the top of the page and an unnumbered footnote at the bottom consisting of the author's name and professional mailing address. Formal tables (numbered, with table heads, frames, stubs, rules) should be submitted as camera copy, but the author should contact the Press Serials Department for editorial and preparation assistance before final typing of this issue. Taxonomic keys in natural history papers should use the aligned pair format in the zoology and paleobiology series and the multilevel offset format in the botany series.
If cross-referencing is necessary between the key and the text, do not include page references in the key, but instead number the excluded taxa with their corresponding heads in the text. Synonymy in zoology and paleobiology series should use the short form (taxon, author, year:page), with the full reference at the end of the paper under "Literature Cited". Footnotes, if few, whether footnotes or bibliographical, should be typed at the bottom of the text page on which the reference appears.
If bibliographical footnotes are required, use the short form (author/short title/page) with the full reference in the bibliography. Use the colon bracket system for volume/number/page citations For alignment and arrangement of elements, follow the format of the series for which the manuscript is intended. Legends for illustrations should not be attached to the art nor included in the text, but should be submitted at the end of the manuscript—with as many legends typed, double-spaced, on a page as is convenient.
If several "figures" are treated as components of a single larger figure, they should be indicated in small italics (underlined in copy) in the illustration, legend, and text citations: "Figure 9b.". If the illustrations are intended to be printed separately on coated material following the text, they should be named Plates and all components should be lettered as shown in the figures: "Table 9.b_.". Keys for all symbols in the illustration should appear in the figure and not in the legend.
