New Employee Safety Orientation

Alfred University has recently implemented a new health and safety training program and policy to orient new employees. This policy provides guidance and training to new employees, meeting regulatory guidelines per OSHA General Industry Standard 29 CFR 1910. All new faculty, staff and graduate student employees will attend New Employee Safety Orientation Training in the EHS office (Myers Hall 117) to review general safety guidelines. This training will be approximately 2 hours.

We must train the "newest" of our employees; therefore, we will be individually emailing all employees who started working in the past year to schedule small group training sessions. I am working my way through the alphabet, so if you know you are a new employee, please be patient, I will get to you very soon. Supervisors are being copied on emails to ensure their employees attend this mandatory training.

There is a checklist the new employee will receive that must be signed by the supervisor, and returned to EHS within one week, which will aid in the completion of safety training. All supervisors are being asked to review this safety checklist in detail with their employee. Should there be questions or any needs of safety related items, please contact EHS.

Beginning this fall, all student-employees (assistants, work study...) will also be required to have New Employee Safety Orientation. There will be further communications regarding this training, as we are still in the process of ensuring we can accommodate everyone's needs.

New Policy for Summer Motor Pool Use

Due to the increased demand for exclusive, long-term use of fleet vehicles during the summer months, it has become necessary to revisit the current operating procedures to ensure we are able to most effectively serve the needs of the campus community. With currently more than 75% of the vehicles being reserved for the entire summer, the ability to support normal university travel requests and maintain the fleet of vehicles is compromised. Most of these vehicles reserved for the entire summer travel very few miles and the payback does not cover the maintenance on the vehicles during this period. Therefore we have developed the following policy (see below):

Math Talk: Mitch Holbrook's 'Stock Market Valuation Through Data Analysis' Mitch Holbrook will be presenting a Math Talk

entitled "Stock Market Valuation Through Data Analysis"

The talk will be about how the classic axiom of investing is to buy low and sell high. This is a difficult task as most investors do not have a simple method to determine when a market is under or over valued at a given time.

Through the use of mathematical analysis we are able to create a new index that represents the intrinsic value of the S&P 500. We then show that the intrinsic value index is relatively accurate in determining market bottoms, which investors could use as a signal to enter the market with a larger margin of safety.

Join us for this interesting and educational talk!

Free SafeTALK Training

The Psychology Club and Wellness Center are sponsoring a free, SafeTALK training session Monday, April 20 from 12:30-4 p.m. in Nevins Theater.

SafeTALK prepares anyone over the age of 16 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety.

As a SafeTALK-trained suicide alert helper you will be better able to:

*move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide

*identify people who have thoughts of suicide

*apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, intervention caregivers.

Pre-registration is recommended by Monday, April 13, by calling Ashley at 585.593.5223, ext. 17, or email at [email protected].

Pizza and beverages will be provided by the AU Psychology Club.
