Managed Student Printing Program

In the spring semester of 2011, ITS computer labs and AU's libraries are going to implement a Managed Printing Program for students. The purpose of this initiative is to reduce unnecessary printing in public computer labs on campus.

Using a print management software program called PaperCut, AU will assign each student a set

number of free printed pages per semester. After a student has exceeded the number of free prints, he or she may add money to his or her account and continue printing. Each month, the student will be charged for the extra amount.

For more information, please visit the Managed Student Printing Program Web page.

Open Enrollment for 2011 Benefits

The open enrollment period for Alfred University benefits will be from Nov. 18 through Dec. 3, 2010.

The benefits chosen during this time will be effective Jan. 1, 2011.

We will hold information meetings in the Nevins Theater on Thursday, Nov. 18 and Friday, Nov. 19 and schedules will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

A special meeting will be held for employees who do not participate in the University Medical Plans to show how our supplemental plans work with other benefits to complete your protection.

Another special Retiree only meeting will be held to answer questions regarding offerings for retirees.

Every effort has been made to assure our employees and eligible retirees that they will have access to affordable and comprehensive benefits that will meet the needs of themselves and their families. We have worked very hard with our brokers and providers to design plan options that will protect participants from financial harm while assuring the best access to care available.

The Health Care Reform legislation has allowed us to enhance our plan offerings to cover dependents up to age 26, to offer preventative care with no cost to the employee or their dependents and to provide for a third party dispute resolution system when a claim is denied. These enhancements to our medical plans are coming at a very reasonable small increase as compared to previous years. We are also able to offer an enhanced vision plan for those employees who wear glasses or contacts that is less expensive than in years past.

For non-statutory employees we have worked with our dental carrier to allow for those persons who did not take coverage last year to enter the program without a waiting period for services. The dental plan has been hugely successful and is a great way to ensure your general health by taking care of your teeth.

Facts and answers for your questions about these plan changes and offerings will be provided at the upcoming meetings. Please plan to attend so that you will have the information you need to make the best choices for yourself and your family.

Richard Neer, Perkins Ceramic History Lecture

Richard Neer will present the Twelfth Annual Dorothy Wilson Perkins Ceramic History Lecture sponsored by the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art at Alfred University.

Neer is the David B. and Clara E. Stern Professor of Humanities, Art History and the College at the University of Chicago, where he is also an affiliate of the departments of Classics and Cinema & Media Studies.

The title of his talk is "Greek Vases: Wine and Humor in the Age of Tragedy."

This lecture will discuss the fineware pottery produced in ancient Athens during the 400s BCE-the age of Pericles and the Parthenon, Socrates and Sophocles. The figured decoration on these vessels give a unique window into the daily lives of the Greeks. Specifically, Attic pottery was produced for use at drinking parties known as symposia. Conducted under the auspices of Dionysos, the god of wine, these parties were often rambunctious.

The focus of this talk will be on the ways in which the drunken, disorderly world of the drinking party is reflected in the images on Athenian pottery.

Date: Thursday, Nov. 11 Time: 4:30 p.m.

Location: Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center

AU Student Seeks AU Clothing for Community Blanket

AU student Isabella Caesar is seeking donations of fabric clothing that will be crocheted into a

community blanket. This blanket will be donated to the Turning Point Center in Hornell to be hopefully used to provide warmth for a community member in need.

Ideal items would be AU apparell/old t-shirts or any other items that are Alfred related that you don't need. The whole final piece would reflect the AU community and will be put on display in Powell Campus Center for a few days before heading to Hornell. It will be sent to the Turning Point Center too help those residents make it through the winter months.

There will be a cardboard box by the info desk in Powell with the title "donated fabrics" on it starting this week and throughout next week.

Please help make this happen for those that are less advantaged than you. Thank you for any donations.

Questions can be sent to Isabella at [email protected].
