“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it.” -- Wilferd Peterson

“Jaguars Dream Big” is the theme of the 2015 IUPUI Homecoming Week; it's a celebration of aspirations of IUPUI students as well as the commitment of IUPUI faculty and staff.

I encourage you to attend some of this week’s Homecoming events. The Campus Campaign begins this week. Paws Pantry -- the campus program I’ve selected as the Chancellor’s Choice for the campus campaign -- is sponsoring “Can the Dean,” a contest to encourage canned food donations.

Today’s homecoming highlight is a reception for the 2015 candidates for Homecoming King and Queen, selected through an application and interview process. Winners will be crowned at halftime of the IUPUI women's basketball game versus Western Illinois at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Jungle.

To coincide with this year's Homecoming theme, Jaguars Dream Big, students, faculty, staff and alumni were asked to share their dreams -- and how IUPUI helped to influence them. The dreams submitted include:

Dan Remington, sustainable management and policy graduate (SPEA class of 2014) and customer service manager at the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc. said: “During my time at IUPUI, I became aware of environmental issues that plague our planet as a result of emissions from power generation, manufacturing, and automobiles. I decided that I wanted to commit my life's work to pursuing my dream of making the world a better place for our generation and generations to come.”

And Clara Jasmine Moore, a senior in the Herron School of Art and Design, remarked: “Dreaming big is all about setting goals for yourself and taking risks. It does not matter where you come from, what you look like, how old you are, or what skill level you possess. Everybody has a chance for greatness.”

Now, that’s the spirit!
