Woughter named acting vice president for Student Affairs 6/29/04

Kathleen H. Woughter, director of the Alfred University Career Development Center since 1997, will serve as acting vice president for Student Affairs, AU President Charles M. Edmondson announced today."Kathleen Woughter has proven herself to be a very talented and capable administrator, one who works well with students, faculty, alumni and the general public," said Edmondson. "She is an excellent choice to lead our critical Student Affairs division during this time of transition, providing the stability and leadership we need."Woughter will take over Aug. 1 from Gerald Brody, AU's vice president for Student Affairs, who is leaving the University after 11 years to take become vice president for Student Affairs for Southwestern University near Austin, TX."I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in my new role during the upcoming year," said Woughter. "We have a strong, competent division and I know I can count on the Student Affairs staff to work together and maintain our high standards throughout 2004- 05."Under Woughter's direction, Alfred University's Career Development Center has won numerous awards and accolades, including praise from AU's own students and graduates, who have consistently ranked the CDC highly in the student opinion surveys, particularly in comparison to how students at other four-year private institutions ranked their career placement services. Students also honored Woughter with an "Alfie" Award for Outstanding Staff

Contributions to Student Life; recipients are chosen by a vote of the AU student body. Woughter received the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers' Dr. Stanley Shuman Award for Research in 2003 to support development of a web-based educational tool relating to visual art technical skill sets, seen as a key to helping graduates of fine art programs gain employment. Other innovative programs developed by the CDC, many in conjunction with the AU Alumni and Community Relations Office, include "Bring the City to Alfred" to acquaint students with Boston. MA, where many of the young alumni relocate; "Women Leading Business," a leadership retreat for women students on team building, leadership style, networking and balancing life roles; "Eye on Business," a month-long series of workshops, mock interviews, campus recruiting and field trips for College of Business students; "Alumni Networking Night," an annual event in New York City that draws more than 100 alumni and students; "Real World," a series of workshops to introduce students to life after college' and "Byte the Site," a web-based career center marketing project that won an innovation award from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Woughter also received the EACE Philip J. Brockway Award for Innovation in 2000.Woughter has been a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers since 1997, and is a contributor to its website. She is also a member of the Eastern

Association of Colleges and Employers and is a member of is Creative Careers Network and has been a member of its conference program and professional development committees. She is a frequent presenter at national, regional and local conferences.A member of the Rochester Area Career Development Association since 1997, she is currently its secretary, and is also a member of Greater Rochester Recruits.She contributed an article, "Succeeding at Teacher Recruitment Fairs" in Teacher Employment Opportunities, published by the American Association for Employment in Education in 2000, and was a reviewer for Career Success Right Here Right Now!, published in 1998.On campus, Woughter is a member of the Administrative and Technical Specialists Council; served as a member of a Middle States Accreditation Project Team; was a member of the President's Commission on Marketing; was inducted in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in 2002 and Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society in 2000. She is a chair of the Student Affairs Staff Development Committee and was a member of the President's Commission on

Athletics.Woughter is currently president of the board of directors of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, and has been a member of the board for several years.Prior to becoming director of the Career Development Center at Alfred University, Woughter was coordinator of Career Counseling Services for the University from 1995 to 1997. She was acting director of Placement at Alfred State College during 1994; was coordinator of Student and Staff Development for Residence Life at Alfred State College from 1992 to 1995, and was a residence hall coordinator at Alfred State College from 1990 to 1992.Woughter earned her master's in counseling from Alfred University in 1993, and a B.S.

degree in biology and secondary education from Geneseo State University. She is a certified swimming coach.Woughter resides in Almond with her husband, Robert, and their children.
