MORNING Time of Issue: 0945 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

Wet spell over Northwest & Central India till 9th January:

♦ A Western Disturbance lies as a cyclonic circulation over western parts of Afghanistan & neighbourhood at lower tropospheric levels with a trough aloft in middle & upper tropospheric levels along Long. 64°E to the north of Lat. 22°N. Under its influence, an induced cyclonic circulation has formed over southwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood.This Western Disturbance is likely to move eastwards, deepen further into the Arabian Sea and reach North Pakistan region during next 24 hours. It is likely to persist over North Pakistan region for subsequent 2-3 days. Another Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & adjoining Punjab persist.

♦ Under the influence of above systems:

i) Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall over Western Himalayan Region till 09th and decrease significantly thereafter.

ii) Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on 07th and isolated heavy to very heavy falls on 08th. Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall very likely over Himachal Pradesh on 08th & 09th and over Uttarakhand on 08th January.

iii) Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, north Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh during 07th-09th and decrease significantly thereafter. Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Punjab on 07th & 08th and over Haryana, Chandigarh & Northwest Uttar Pradesh on 08th January. Light to moderate rainfall likely over Delhi on 08th January.

iv) Isolated thunderstorms with lightning/hail very likely over Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Madhya Pradesh on 07th & 08th and over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha & Chhattisgarh during 08th–11th January.

v) Rainfall activity over Tamilnadu & adjoining Andhra Pradesh is likely to increase from 10th January. Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Tamilnadu on 10th

& 11th January.

Yesterday's minimum temperatures were above normal by 3-6°C over most parts of Northwest & central India and Gujarat and near normal over rest parts of North India.

No Cold Wave Conditions likely over North India during next 5 days.

Dense Fog in isolated pockets in night/morning hours very likely over Bihar, West Bengal & Sikkim on 8th/9th January.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rainfall/thundershower observed (from 0830-1730 hours IST of Yesterday): at many places over East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh and Saurashtra

& Kutch; at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, West Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat Region and at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh.

♦Significant amount of Rainfall (from 0830-1730 IST of Yesterday)(1 cm or more): Shajapur-3; Tikamgarh-2; and Kanpur, Hamirpur and Nowgong-1 each.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Dense to very dense fog at isolated pockets over northwest Rajasthan, northwest Madhya Pradesh and west Uttar Pradesh dense fog at isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal moderate fog over east Bihar and southwest Rajasthan.

Visibility recorded (at 0530 hours IST of today)(200m or less): Ganganagar, Gwalior and Agra 0-25each; Allahabad and Malda 50 each; Purnea and Jaisalmer- 200 each.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures (as on 06-01-2022): Minimum temperatures were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at many places over Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat State; at a few places over West Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh and at isolated places over Uttrakhand; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad, East Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh and at isolated places over Tamilnadu Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Marathwada and Vidarbha; at a few places over Madhya Maharshtra and at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Konkan

& Goa , Rayalaseema, Telangana and Andaman & Nicobar Islands Kerala & Mahe. They were below normal (-1.6°C to -3.1°C) at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and North Interior Karnataka and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the Lowest minimum temperature of 8.6°C is reported at Chapra (Bihar) over the plains of the country.

Maximum Temperature Departures (as on 06-01-2022): Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Assam & Meghalaya; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over Chhattsgarh and Kerala & Mahe; at a few places over Uttarakhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, Vidarbha and Odisha and at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal,.

They were markedly below normal (-5.0°C or less) at most places over East Rajasthan; at a few places over West Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh;

appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over East Uttar Pradesh and at a few places over Gujarat state, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Bihar and near normal at rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 35.3°C is reported at Alapuzha (Kerala).

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over western parts of Afghanistan &

neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists. The trough aloft in middle & upper tropospheric levels with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level now runs roughly along Long. 64°E to the north of Lat. 22°N.

♦ An induced cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Rajasthan & adjoining south Pakistan and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level.

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & adjoining Punjab between 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The induced cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level has become less marked.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 12th January, 2022

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures very likely over most parts of Northwest India &

Madhya Pradesh during next 2 days and fall by 3-5°C thereafter.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures very likely over Gujarat State during next 24 hours and fall by 3-5°C thereafter.

♦No significant change over East India during next 4-5 days.

♦Shallow to Moderate Fog in the morning hours in isolated pockets over Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days during 12th - 14th January, 2022

♦ Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Northeast India.

♦ Dry weather likely over remaining parts of the country.

07 January (Day 1):Heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan

& Muzaffarabad and heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Punjab.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh and with lightning at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra.

Dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim.

08 January (Day 2): Heavy to very heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad;heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places very likely over Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha and with lightning at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Maharshtra and Marathwada.

09 January (Day 3): Heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places likely over Himachal Pradesh.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha and with lightning at isolated places over Telangana, Marathwada, Chhattisgarh and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

10 January (Day 4): Heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over Chhattisgarh and with lightning at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha Telangana and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

11 January (Day 5): Heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over Chhattisgarh and with lightning at isolated places over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

SIGNIFICANTWEATHERFEATURES

♦ Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation in the lower/middle tropospheric levels over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity had occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on three days along with isolated heavy/very heavy rainfall on one or two days and isolated extremely heavy rainfall on one day during the week.

♦ Under the influence of an intense Western Disturbance, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall activity had occurred over Western Himalayan Region towards the end of the week; movement of the system along with its induced cyclonic circulation had caused scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity over Punjab and isolated to scattered rainfall activity over remaining parts of northwest India and Saurashtra & Kutch.

♦ Remnants of Western Disturbances had caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity over parts of east India on one day in the beginning of the week; under their influence, isolated rainfall activity had occurred over the same region on one or two days and over parts of northeast India on three to four days during the week.

Heavy rain:

♦ Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day during the week.

♦ Heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal and Chhattisgarh on one day each during the week.

Fog:

♦ Dense to very dense fog at many places had occurred over East Uttar Pradesh on two days.

♦ Dense to very dense fog at isolated places had occurred over East Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh on three days each; over East Madhya Pradesh on two days; over West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh &

Delhi, East Rajasthan, Odisha, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Bihar on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog at isolated places had occurred over West Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on two days each; over Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam &

Meghalaya and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day

♦ Cold day to Severe Cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over Punjab and Himachal Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at a few places with severe cold day conditions isolated places had occurred over East and West Madhya Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over Chhattisgarh on one day during the week.

Cold Wave:

♦ Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at a few places had occurred over Punjab on two days during the week.

♦ Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at isolated places had occurred over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on three days; over East Rajasthan on two days; over Punjab on one day during the week.

♦ Cold wave conditions at isolated places had occurred over West Rajasthan on three days; over Himachal Pradesh on two days; over East Rajasthan, East & West Uttar Pradesh, East & West Madhya Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day each during the week.

♦ The highest maximum temperature of 36.8oC had been recorded at Kottayam (Kerala & Mahe) on 31st December 2021 and the lowest minimum temperature of 1.6oC had been recorded at Hissar (Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi) on 2nd January 2022 over the plains of the country during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood lay over East Uttar Pradesh & adjoining Bihar extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 85°E to the north of Lat. 20°N on 30th December 2021; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over Bihar & adjoining East Uttar Pradesh and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level, with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level running roughly along Long.89°E to the north of Lat. 20°N in the early morning of 31st Dec 2021; the remnant of this Western Disturbance lay as a cyclonic circulation over Bihar at 1.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 89°E to the north of Lat. 20°N in the forenoon of the same day; the cyclonic circulation has become less marked whereas the trough with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level has moved away east-northeastwards in the evening of the same day.

♦ Last week’s cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh & adjoining Bihar extending upto 2.1 km above mean sea level has merged with the above mentioned Western Disturbance on 30th December 2021.

♦ Last week’s trough from the cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh & adjoining Bihar to Telangana across East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level has become less marked on 30th December 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast at 5.8 km above mean sea level on 31st December 2021;it persisted over the same region and was seen between 4.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level on 1st Jan 2022;It continued to persist over the same region and was seen at 3.6 km above mean sea level on 2nd; it has become less marked on 3rd January 2022.

♦ A feeble Western Disturbance was seen as trough in westerlies between 4.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat 32°N on 1st January 2022; it has moved away east-northeastwards on 2nd January 2022.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over central Bangladesh extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 1st January 2022;

it lay over east Bangladesh & neighbourhood and extended upto 2.1 km above mean sea level on 2nd; it persisted over the same areas and was seen between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level on 3rd and 4th; it has become less marked on 5th January 2021.

♦ A trough ran from Gulf of Mannar to Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast and extended up to 0.9 km above mean sea level on 2nd January 2022; it has become less marked in the early morning of 3rd January 2022.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over southwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 2nd January 2022; it has become less marked on 3rd January 2022.

♦ A Western Disturbance was seen as a trough in lower & middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.50°E to the north of Lat.30°N on 3rd January 2022; it continued as a trough in lower

& middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.55°E to the north of Lat.30°N on 4th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan & neighbourhood extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.65°E to the north of Lat.25°N on 5th January 2022.

♦ An induced cyclonic circulation lay over southwest Rajasthan & adjoining Pakistan and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 4th January 2021 and it persisted over the same areas extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 5th January 2021.
