‘India Everywhere’ in China

(WEF China Business Summit, India-China Business Summit, Made In India Exhibition)

2006 is the “India-China Friendship Year”. To further commemorate this, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - in cooperation with IBEF and the Embassy of India in Beijing - organized the 4th "Made in India (MII)" Show from 8 – 11 September 2006 at the China International Exhibition Centre in Beijing, China. Mr. Kapil Sibal, Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences inaugurated the show. Present at the inauguration were Mr. Cheng Jin Pei, Vice Minister of Science & Technology, Government of China, R.Seshasayee, President, CII Mr. Wan Jifei, Chairman, CCPIT, Mr. Ajay S. Shriram, Chairman, Trade Fair Council, CII and Mr. Nalin Surie, Indian Ambassador to China. This show had been organized on the sidelines of India- China Business Summit and WEF China Summit.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Kapil Sibal stated:

“Bilateral trade between the two countries is on the rise with India’s total trade with China touching $ 18.7 billion this year. The Made in India show will help and expand the trade basket between India and China. Today the world is driven by high quality and low cost products which are core areas of expertise for India and China respectively, thus cooperation amongst the two countries will be a win-win situation for both China and India.”

Key Objectives

To increase bilateral trade between India and China.

To promote Joint Ventures and Investment between the two countries.

To showcase Indian industry’s high quality goods, services and technologies.

To deepen understanding between the two countries and promote their exchange and cooperation in science and technology, education, information, agriculture and other fields.

Exhibitor Profile

Participants at the MII show included several organisations under the umbrella of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Earth Sciences. In addition, several banking and private institutions and industries also participated in the show to explore opportunities for setting up a presence in China or expanding operations. The exhibition covered over 50 participants from a cross-section of industries such as automobiles, ceramics, healthcare products, hospitality, farm equipment, cement, textiles, chemicals, steel etc. Participants included companies like Suzlon Energy, Haldia Petrochemicals, Fashion Technology Park, Taj Group of Hotels, NTPC, EXIM Bank, State Bank of India among others.

IBEF’s role:

Considering the strategic importance of the event, IBEF decided to participate in the exhibition with the aim of showcasing itself as a ‘resource centre’ for disseminating ‘Brand India’

information. The intent was to highlight the economic trends and business opportunities available in India.

IBEF Stall

IBEF set up an ‘L-shaped’ stall that was 7X7 meters in dimension. In order to reach out to the masses, the following literature was translated into Chinese (for display and distribution):

Other items that were put on display were IBEF publications (India Now magazine, Sectoral and State reports, US Companies in India-Success Stories, Fortune 500 Companies, India CD pack).

A non-stop 90 - second movie on India (with Chinese subtitles) was also shown.

Two Chinese students were hired as temp staff to ease the communication with the visitors. They were extremely efficient and showed great enthusiasm to work as ‘brand ambassadors’ for IBEF in the future.

Mr. Kapil Sibal praised IBEF for its efforts in marketing and branding India. He introduced IBEF to his counterparts as a “unique and strategic initiative”.

Note: IBEF was the only stall that had the stall display in Chinese. (samples of posters and brochures enclosed)

There were additional requests and follow-up emails for:

Finding trading partners in India for textiles, food processing, etc.

Use IBEF as a platform for identifying Indian companies that want to set up business in China.

Information on water-purification industries.

Collaborating with IBEF to service SME’s and government-run organizations.

IBEF to organize business as well as cultural trips for Chinese businessmen to India.

Promoting Indian brands in China.

Setting up of an IBEF branch office in China.

Events & Conferences

Coinciding with the MII show, there were various business and social activities that had been planned and supported by IBEF to promote the ‘India Everywhere’ campaign. These are outlined below:

CII-CEO’s Delegation

A 12-member CEO delegation comprising leading industrialists and entrepreneurs led by Mr. R.

Seshasayee, President, CII, kick - started the ‘India Everywhere’ campaign in China. Mr. Ajay Khanna, CEO, IBEF was a part of this delegation as well.

India-China Business Summit

On the eve of the WEF summit, IBEF organized the India-China Business Summit. The event was supported by CII. The theme of the summit was –“India China: Building Synergies in the Core Sectors.” This summit brought together the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India, as well as the Chambers of Commerce of India and China on a single platform.

IBEF’s 90- second India movie was shown to provoke interest in IBEF’s initiatives.

IBEF disseminated the following materials at the summit:

Networking Dinner

A special networking dinner was organized by IBEF and CII at The Sheraton hotel to further assist business interactions. All exhibitors and members of the Indian Community in Beijing were present at the dinner. IBEF publications, CDs and flagpins were distributed among the guests. Post the dinner; NDTV Profit interviewed Mr. Ajay Khanna. He was asked to comment on the collaboration and competition between India and China. In the context of Indian companies expanding in the East Asian region, Mr. Khanna stated, “There is a need for promoting India in the East Asian Region.” This interview was aired on NDTV Profit on the 17th September 2006.

Breakfast session

IBEF also organized a breakfast meeting (as a part of the WEF Summit) with Mr. Kapil Sibal, Mr.

Baba Kalyani and Mr. Nalin Surie along with the WEF counterparts at the China World Hotel to discuss ‘Opportunities and Challenges facing India.’ Approximately 60 participants attended the session. Post opening remarks made by these leaders, sufficient time was given for Q&A with Mr.

Sibal.

IBEF’s ‘India Now’ magazine, the India CD as well as the Chinese brochures were disseminated amongst the participants.

WEF China Business Summit

The two-day WEF China Business Summit brought together more than 500 participants across 27 countries. The theme of the summit was – “Sustainable Growth through Innovation: China’s Creative Imperative.” Mr. Kapil Sibal led the ‘India Everywhere’ campaign at the Summit. The publication – “Global Agenda” with a special focus on India was put on display for all the sessions.

For this purpose, a team of 7 journalists from 5 leading Indian media publications/channels travelled to Beijing, namely Hindustan, The Hindu, NDTV, CNN IBN, as well as a free lancer. The journalists were from a cross-section of beats- Science & technology, Politics and Business.

The events received over 44 print and electronic exposures during the 6-day period. This included:

18 exposures in print (The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Indian Express, Hindu Business Line, Financial Express, Business Standard)
