AI@IITH”

With the availability of computing power and data, the attention was more on developing algorithms to capture the pattern information in the distribution of the data. In conclusion, it is appropriate to quote C.E.Shannon on the limitations of current computer models for showing intelligence.

This trained neural network model will be used to predict the type of defect which can classify the defects due to different causes and aging of the sample. Due to the frequent back and forth within the flow, it is a very time-consuming process and the lead time of the end product is increased.

Computational methods for Tele-monitoring of heart health

A rudimentary form of artificial intelligence (AI), ANN takes multiple inputs and “learns” through training steps to recognize patterns and anomalies, to process them into a reliable and accurate output. Automated generation of Natural Language Text

However, it is very necessary to ensure that the incorrect answers generated (called distractors) are in the context of the questions and are not semantically equivalent. It requires a correct understanding of the intent of the questions, and also keeping track of the entire conversation, as the user can specify his/her own. We develop algorithms that can monitor such dialogue states and query/answer appropriately to understand the complete requirement.

Social media posts generated during disasters often contain ground-level information from affected regions. All this information can be quite useful in planning rescue and relief operations significantly, and alleviate the suffering of people in the affected regions.

Natural Intelligence & AI – Spinal Cord and Movement Laboratory

We are working to automatically generate such grammatically correct long distractors for reading comprehension tasks. The automated generation of correct answers and appropriate follow-up questions is the core of conversation systems. Efficiently retrieving such messages generated during this period can provide useful insights into the impact in specific regions, the resource needs (food, water, medicine, blankets, etc.) in different locations, and the efforts of different NGOs and individuals.

Snippet of AI Research from Saidhiraj Amuru

Dr. Saidhiraj Amuru

In each of the research problems we study, we first understand the theoretical underpinnings of each problem using the extensive wireless communications literature available from over 70 years of research in these areas. Most of the problems we work on require students to have a good understanding of the basics of wireless communication as well as hands-on experience with machine learning tools. At IITH, I presented a course on machine learning applications to wireless communications, the first such course in academia worldwide.

As part of this course, we will learn how to apply modern machine learning techniques to solve a variety of wireless communications problems. Some of the projects completed by students in this course have resulted in publications in prestigious venues.

3D Printing: Connecting the Virtual to Real

Every undergraduate who joins IITH is introduced to 3D printing/digital fabrication technologies in their first year. Also, exposing students to the latest technologies right from the start excites them and involves them from the very beginning in the creation of products of high technological value. In the field of research, the emphasis was on the inclusion of production constraints in the calculation and optimization phase.

With 3D printing it is crucial to ensure that not only the process, but also the process planning is optimized. This not only 'improves' the process, but makes it possible to create components with tailor-made properties.

Creating a Brain out of a Brain From mind-boggling to mental conditioning”

Shristi Gupta

You certainly can't completely mimic the human brain and its intricacies, but some parts of it can be mimicked through AI, that's the beauty of it, that's what I'm glued to, it can sit on top of anything and improve the process. Analysis of loss surfaces has been through Hessian spectral density, double derivative methods, experimentally playing with hyperparameters, etc. Skip connections and batch normalization techniques have been shown to work in bringing convexity to loss surfaces, which helps to generalize and reach correct hyperparameters for optimization.

I also worked on a project that uses natural language processing through gated CNNs that predict the sentiment of a review. I am now preparing for internships and at the same time working on my dissertation under the skilled guidance of Prof.

  • Tell us a little about yourself?
  • What made you join IIT, Hyderabad?
  • Which subject did you enjoy most and Least & Why?
  • Which other activities were you involved in?
  • How have your education and training prepared you for your current job role?
  • The best moment you can recall from yours’ life @ IIT Hyderabad?
  • What message do you want to convey to the existing student folk @ IIT, Hyderabad?
  • What as per you is best about IITH and please suggest an improvement area for betterment?

Having been at Stanford during the shift to deep learning, I consider myself fortunate to have experience in both classical ML algorithms as well as deep learning. Besides these, there were three classes in particular at Stanford to which I owe other facets of my current ML knowledge – Convex Optimization, CNNs for Visual Recognition, Deep Learning for NLP. This may sound like a trope but is as good a message as I can give to an IIT student - work hard and play hard, you will look back on these years as some of the best in your life.

I am indebted to the smart ability that instilled in me both technical knowledge and a sense of discipline. As for an area of improvement: perhaps finding a way to get temporary exchange students from other countries, if logistically possible, to increase the diversity of exposure to our students.

  • What specialized training have you had?

As one of the pioneer groups, we had many opportunities to start new initiatives. who is doing his PhD in astrophysics), we started Cepheid, the Astronomy Club of IIT Hyderabad. Together with Aditya Srinivas (also works on AI and ML) we founded Elektronica, the electronics club of IIT Hyderabad. I was hired in my current position because of my expertise in machine learning and reinforcement learning.

Strong grounding in mathematics, signals and data from IIT Hyderabad and then focusing on machine learning with limited labeled data during Ph.D at University of Michigan prepared me well for my current job role. Due to the lockdown (covid-19), we started playing Age of Empires 2 again, which has brought back so many happy memories of life at IIT Hyderabad.

  • Any other message you want to communicate!

We used to play “Age of Empires 2” all night in the hostel, go for night walks around the campus, discuss philosophy and astronomy and travel to Zam Zam Dhaba to eat spicy food. What do you think is the best thing about IITH and please suggest an area of improvement for improvement. Today I work as an AI/DL R&D engineer because the courses I took helped me learn so many things that are hard to learn on the job.

Only do a dissertation in the area you are interested in and make an impact on it before you pass out. The best result comes when the competition for the grade is fierce and some of the underachieving students get F grades.

Neelesh Dewangan

What do you think is best about IITH and please suggest an area of improvement for betterment? improvement? .. I liked to scold my guide. Academy: Many students take the courses lightly, the competition was not fierce among the students. Fear of getting F grade must be there among the students, otherwise many will just keep enjoying.

During the courses I mainly focused on Machine Learning related topics and did my thesis on Data Mining, which later turned out to be Journal (with the help of a friend). Because my thesis and most of the course work relate to the current position, it provided a good foundation and is used in my daily life.

One thing I liked about IITH was how much freedom we had to choose advanced courses later and how easy it was to get involved in research. I think one thing I would like to see is more alumni in my field of work, which will only come with time.
