Some of the important subjects covered are astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, new materials, immunology and biotechnology. The purpose of this book is to give the reader an insight into the fascinating world of plastics and polymers.

Elasticity and Plasticity

Polymers

Each elephant with birds on its back represents the monomer and the long chain formed by the elephants is the polymer. The following table shows some polymers and the structure of the respective monomers and the repeating unit.

Synthetic Plastics

However; Just as modern man stopped eating raw meat and started cooking his own food, he also discovered ways and means of producing materials of desirable quality from natural raw materials. Petroleum is further cracked to obtain even lighter hydrocarbons, which are the raw materials for most of the common plastics used today.

Process Of Polymerization

I HOOC -CHz - CHz - CHz -CHz - COO -CHz - CHz -OH I The HOOC group on the left side of the chain can react with another EG molecule and the OH group on the right side can react with another adipic acid molecule. For example, several molecules of ethylene can react with each other to form a long molecule.

Traditional Recipes

Cotton is composed of cellulose, which happens to be the most abundant material in the vegetable kingdom. He tested variations in the amount of the ingredient and applied greater heat and pressure.

Synthetic Polymers

Today, Baekeland is considered the father of a new branch of chemistry called polymer chemistry, while the name Swinburne is hardly known to anyone. Bakelite proved to be a very versatile material and was used in the manufacture of many household objects from radios and ashtrays to molded furniture.

Two Main

Entanglement Of Chains

But in this case, the children not only take care of their neighbors in the chain, but a few of them also take care of children in the other chains. The polymer of thermosets is initially in the form of a powder or a liquid in which the chains are not connected. After the half-baked resin is poured into the mold, the additional cross-linking is achieved.

Spices and

Colours and Pigments

There are some martyr molecules or commondos in plastic which protect the plastic from attack by ultraviolet rays. An interesting trick is played to reduce the effect of the ultraviolet rays on dye. However, during this destruction process, the energy of the ultraviolet rays is consumed, preventing the dye from being destroyed.

Fillers

They provide the necessary energy to the molecule of the dye, which breaks the chemical bonds in the molecule and causes it to dissolve. The organic colors used in the former are more susceptible to ultraviolet rays than the inorganic pigments used in the latter. Very large quantities of copper-clad laminates are used for printed circuits in the electronics industry.

Plasticizers

Compared to DOO, DBP can be easily leached with water and the product quickly becomes hard and brittle.

Other Additives

This is due to the discharge of the static charge that develops on it when the water evaporates. To reduce the possibility of such an occurrence, antistatic agents are incorporated into plastics or polymers. Several types of amines, amides, phosphate esters and salts of ammonia serve as antistatic agents.

Polyethylene

Thin films of LDPE are used to make plastic bags for packaging milk, washing powder, edible products and textile products. In the recent past, HOPE has been widely used for making water pipes required for irrigation. The current production of LOPE in India is 1.4 lakh tonnes and that of HOPE is 70,000 tonnes per annum.

Polyvinyl Chloride

The bars that gave Jor hold and those at the back of the seats in the passenger buses are coated with PVC to give a warm and comfortable feeling. Manufacturing of PVC started in India in 1961 when the Callico Company started producing it in Bombay.

Polystyrene

The broken edges are sharp enough to give a nasty cut if proper care is not taken and therefore polystyrene toys are no longer manufactured. Polystyrene is used in food containers, cutlery, refrigerator lining, food packaging, bracelets, umbrella handles, combs, etc. - material, for decoration and for making disposable glasses, the kind one uses at railway stations.

Polypropylene

Others

Used to make pillows and mattresses, polyurethane foam (PUF) is also used as an insulating material in refrigerators and air conditioning systems, due to its very low thermal conductivity. However, it is widely used in emulsion form used for gluing decorative sheets to furniture and as a general purpose wood adhesive. It is sold in India under a number of trade names such as 'Fevicol' and 'Movicol'.

Baking Roasting

Frying

Calendering

If a thin film is to be produced, a series of rolls is used with a successively reduced gap between each pair of rolls.

Die Casting

Rotational Casting

Film Casting

Compression Moulding

Injection Moulding

In most cases, compression molding is used for thermosetting resins that can only be melted once. Injection molding is typically used for thermoplastic resins that can be melted over and over again.

Blow Moulding

Extrusion Moulding

Thermoforming

In this method, the hot plastic sheet is sucked into the cavity by applying vacuum to the other side.

Delicacies

Copolymerized Plastics

Named as 'SAN' using the first alphabets of styrene and acrylonitrile, the product not only has good mechanical strength but also excellent casting properties. A copolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene called 'ABS' has even better mechanical properties such as resistance to wear and good impact strength.

Silicones

Solid silicone articles are made from silicone resins that can be cured by heat, like normal thermosetting resins. Solutions or emulsions of silicone resins are widely used in the preparation of paints and varnishes for waterproofing masonry and other surfaces. Among its many applications, silicones find a place in space programs where they are used in heat shields, solar panels, rocket paints and as insulators and gyrofluids.

Tefl

In the field of electronics, it is electrons that play the key role, but recently a new field called photonics - where photons are the key players - has emerged. Silicone-based polymers, namely polysilanes and polysilanes, are increasingly used in this emerging field.

Novel Plastics

When the bullet hits the jacket, due to the inherent force of the fiber, the energy in the bullet is absorbed and quickly dissipated around due to the layers of the jacket. Instead of the sharp and sharp impact of the bullet, the impact is spread over a large area and the bullet cannot penetrate inside. Although the impact has almost the same energy content of the bullet, but since it acts on a larger area, the person does not suffer serious injuries.

Noodles, Spaghetti

Thus, even in the case of synthetic fibers, India lags far behind developed countries. With about 16 percent of the world's population, we need to increase our production at least 10 times to match the world average, which is 7 kg of synthetic fibers per year per person.

Nylon in fiber form is used for clothing, ropes, fishing nets, tennis racket strings, toothbrush bristles, and industrial filling fabrics. The synthetic grass used on tennis courts today is made of nylon. In its moldable form, nylon is used to make bearing gears and other machine parts.

Terylene

It has only one-seventh the weight of a steel wire of the same diameter, and therefore its tensile strength per weight unit superior to steel.

Acrylic Fibres

The use of this polymer as a textile material is a relatively new phenomenon, although the polymer has been known for quite some time.

Fibre Spinning

This orients the fiber molecules parallel to the axis of the filament and improves the physical properties of the polymer. During the drawing process the diameter of the filament decreases but the tensile strength improves significantly. The uniform diameter of the fiber obtained during the drawing process gives the synthetic cloth its characteristic feel, fall and finish.

Elastomers

The improved crystallinity of the polymer makes it difficult to bend and is responsible for its anti-wrinkle property. Vulcanization is a process in which the polymer chains of rubber are cross-linked via sulfur atoms and is comparable to the curing of the previously described thermosetting plastics. Determining the structure of natural rubber led to efforts to develop synthetic rubbers, and chemists went to work in their laboratories.

Plastics as Food Packaging Material

Therefore, the level of unreacted monomer must be monitored very carefully in the case of such plastics. Proper permission should be obtained from the Food and Drug Administration, Government of India before using any plastic as food packaging material. If pye or polystyrene is used for products that come into contact with the human body, special precautions must be taken.

Special Packaging Materials

The DOPControversy

It is therefore a matter of great concern that DOl' is suspected to be a carcinogen, a substance that causes cancer. Some have shown that OOP in no way affects the DNA present in our body cells. All other carcinogens have been shown to affect the DNA and since DOl' does not, they claim that DOl' is not carcinogenic.

Plastics For Plumbing

Many scientists feel that the development of cancer under such extraordinary conditions is not enough evidence of OOp's ability to cause cancer. Until this controversy is resolved, it is better to avoid plastics compounded with DOl' as food packaging materials and that is exactly what is being done. This is too short a time for any harmful substance found in pve to dissolve in water and create health problems.

Plastics and Fire

Flame retardants are sometimes added to plastics and polymers to make them difficult to ignite. Synthetic fibers shrink when they come into contact with heat and tend to stick to the body. Clothing made of synthetic fibers should therefore be avoided during cooking or when near a heat source.

Plastics And Environment

Chef's Goof-up

Reused Plastics

The best way to guard against this occurrence is to never buy plastic goods on the street and to only go to a reputable store. However, if you choose to buy plastic goods from roadside vendors, there are some simple tricks that can help you spot the excessive use of recycled plastic in such goods. To camouflage this defect, such plastic goods are often made with dark color shades, which are a clear sign of recycled plastic.

Repairing Damage

When plastic is processed, some of the polymer chains burn and turn black. Thus, plastic with an excessive amount of recycled material does not have the same brightness and shine as fresh plastic. The resulting plastic contains such small grains that are not well mixed with the rest of the mass.
