SLDC-Karnataka Industrial Visit Report
Place of visit : SLDC, Karnataka Date : 24 January 2019
Visit team : Prof Usha Surendra, Prof Varaprasad Janamala, Prof. Nirmala John
6 BTEE Students
Duration : One Day Purpose : Industrial Visit
Introduction:
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited is a company wholly owned by the Government of Karnataka. KPTCL was formed on 1-8-1999 by carving out the Transmission and Distribution functions of the erstwhile Karnataka Electricity Board.
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited is mainly vested with the functions of Transmission of power in the entire State of Karnataka and also Construction of Stations & Transmission Lines and maintenance of 400/220/110/66 KV Sub-Stations. KPTL has various wings and one among them is the SLDC.
The State Load Dispatch Center (SLDC) is an Apex body to ensure integrated operation of the power system in Karnataka. SLDC is responsible for the Real time Load Despatch functions, Operation and Maintenance of the SCADA System and Energy Accounting.
Conduct:
24th January 2020
The distance between the SLDC and the CUFE campus is 20 km. The transit time is
around 50 minutes. The team of faculties and students left the campus at 9:45 am and
reached the site at 10:35 am.
Upon arrival the students were escorted by one of the employees to the control room where the whole Energy accounting of Karnataka and the neighboring states was displayed using SCADA. State wise entitlement, scheduled and actual load values were displayed along with the deviation load value
In our country, the load management is done in 3 tiers – state, regional and national. As he name implies, SLDC manages load at the state level.
SCADA:
SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a computer system for gathering and analyzing real time data. SCADA was implemented at SLDC in the year 2009. The Scada here in the SLDC is said to have three interfaces, namely:
1. RTU (Remote terminal Unit) 2. MFT (Multi Function Transducer) 3. Master Control
The data regarding projection of load is given to the SRLDC (Southern Regional Load Dispatch Center) in blocks. Each block is of 15 minutes, making it 96 blocks everyday. This data is gathered by the SLDC using SCADA. The communication medium used by SCADA is INSAT 3A. The SCADA uses the Network Management Software designed by ABB, which is exclusive to SLDC
Intra state ESCOMS :
ESCOMS (Electricity Supply Company) forecast the load for all the regions in Karnataka and give the data to SLDC for scheduling of load. There are 5 five ESCOMS in the state of Karnataka :
1. BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) 2. GESCOM (Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company) 3. HESCOM (Hubli Electricity Supply Company)
4. MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company) 5. CESC (Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation) Karnataka State Generation:
There are 21 Power stations that majorly contribute to the state generation. Among these 21 power stations, 3 of them are thermal power stations (RTPS, BTPS, YTPS) , 16 are hydro power
plants and remaining 2 are private companies (Jindal, UPCL). Of all these, Sharavathy hydro power plant is the cheapest supplier to the SLDC.
Total Capacity : 11336.6 MW Total Generation : 4352 MW IPPS :
IPPS ( Independent Power Producers) generate energy in the form of Solar, wind, Bio mass and hydal energy and also by co-generation.
Total solar capacity of Karnataka : 5216 MW Total Wind Capacity: 4794 MW
Total Generation : 5300 MW
Since the Government act obligates on the utilization of clean and green energy, Non conventional energy generation is encouraged. In case of over generation, hydel power plants are backed down.
The high level of integration of renewables in Karnataka is due to the presence of high HYDEL capacity, which can easily cope up with the sudden changes in generation from renewables.
Conclusion:
The industrial visit helped the students to better understand the concepts of power system monitoring and control through SCADA. It also provided insight to the equipment, terminology and practical issues faced by engineers at the SLDCs, RLDCs, and NLDCs. For example, prior to the visit the students were not familiar with the communication system used by SCADA systems and also the flow of information from ESCOMs to SLDCs to RLDCs and NLDCs. The concepts such as Central Entitlement of every state, effective integration of renewables in the Karnataka state grid. The complex Single Line Diagrams of the whole state, city wise, and the different penalties paid by ESCOMs for erroneous load projections were also among the key points to be observed at the plants.
