Chapter-1 Introduction
Introduction
Scenario of Craft Sector in India
The skills required to master this craft are time consuming and require the practitioner to be an apprentice to the 'master craftsman'. The master craftsmen are the people who are the experts in the craft. This can be possible by combining modern technologies and the past knowledge of the craftsman.
Scope of the research
Definition of the terms used in the thesis Traditional Culture and Craft
The knowledge that can be coded and found in the different formats such as books, magazines, journals and other materials. Ethnography is a research process in which the researcher carefully observes, records and is involved in daily lives for a long period of time, watching what happens and listening to what is said in the community to shed light on the issues that the research focuses on. (Bryman, A., 2001).
Background of this Research
Because of the mass-produced commercial plastic goods, most of the craft items go unnoticed. The final price of the handicraft items also could not compete with the commercialized goods.
Motivation
The local artisans operating in this sector have faced challenges and have been forced to sell their products at a lower price. In 1967, the World Craft Council was founded with the aim of supporting and strengthening local craftsmanship.
Raising Unanswered Research Questions
Although the world is aware of the importance of local and cultural crafts, very little development has been done to promote it among today's youth. craftsman. So if there is a way to capture and preserve tacit knowledge of artisans, and convert it into some form of reusable documentation, then it is possible to replicate, preserve and use such knowledge in the future.
Research Questions Research Problems
If some of the "tacit knowledge" can be captured in digital form, it can be useful in understating trades in a more intuitive way. Such a tacit repository of knowledge is expected to assist in wide-ranging knowledge engineering activities ranging from conservation to heritage mapping, including anthropology, as well as engineering and manufacturing fields.
Working posits of the research
P2: Tacit knowledge, when captured and documented in digital form, can become a database for training new generations of artisans who may have a connection with traditions. P3: Tacit knowledge, when digitized, can bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and current engineering practices in mass production.
Research Methodology and Framework of the study
In the descriptive research stage-I the researcher is clear with the purpose of the research and supports it with more literature and detailed study. In the descriptive research phase, the researcher uses the increased understanding of the research to elaborate the purpose and description of the research.
Knowledge transfer channels
A detailed description of the methodology followed and its relationship to the current research is set out in sections 2.5 and 3.3. All phases of the DRM are iterative in nature and are adjusted during the study.
Contribution by the thesis
For this thesis, some of the methods in capturing the master's tacit knowledge were combined and applied.
Summary of the chapters
Introduce the context of the research, and specify the important terms used and the methodologies used in the research. Explain the development of the digital tool for the craft domain using fuzzy logic.
Chapter-2 Literature Review
Introduction
Understanding the knowledge and its management process in craft domain
- Why is tacit knowledge important in craft domain?
- Fuzziness in the craft knowledge
The research also points to the importance of communication in transferring tacit knowledge. Other characteristics of tacit knowledge are that it is personal, practical (can be described by process), context specific.
Artificial Intelligence and its relation to Knowledge Management in Craft domain Artificial Intelligence (AI) comes under the umbrella of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The
- Acquisition of Knowledge
Researchers have already tried to use the knowledge of the experts in classical AI. The paper shows the basic structure of the expert system adapted from Feigenbaum and McCorduck.
Research into digital craft and craft heritage
Subjects were told to use the other numbers of the 7-point scale to indicate intermediate judgments. A score of 1 (one) means that they feel dog is a very good example of the category animal. Subjects were told to use the other numbers of the 7-point scale, indicating intermediate judgments.
Implementation of designs research into craft and cultural heritage
- Research methods
The planning for distribution, use and withdrawal of the product is discussed in the rest of the morphology. The design research according to Blessing and Chakrabati: is the development of understanding and the development of the support. The level of understanding of the research obtained from the literature review (Review-based DS-I) is sufficient to develop the support (Comprehensive PS), and the project resources allow a formal evaluation of the support (Comprehensive DS-II).
Summary of review
- Lack of proper model to study the mental model of the craftsman
- Lack of comprehensive heuristic for capturing the tacit knowledge of the craftsman
Although several tools have been proposed in the literature to assist in the transcription activity, it still takes approximately four to five hours to transcribe one hour of voice/video recording (Sarkar et al., 2007). The present research attempts to bridge the above gap ie modern technologies and past crafts by capturing the tacit knowledge of the craftsmen working in the bamboo and craft industries. It will also be an opportunity for the craftsman to make an impact in the custom product market.
Aims and Objective of Research
- Research Problems and Research Questions Research Problems
- Working posits of the research
Products can become more sustainable if they anchor tacit knowledge and changing technological knowledge. There is an opportunity to understand the tacit knowledge that goes into creating and producing a product. P1: If there is a way to capture and preserve the tacit knowledge part through a transfer method, the same knowledge could be used by future users for relearning.
Summary of chapter
There is no bridge to join the gap between modern technologies and traditional craftsmanship. It can be utilized by a design researcher who wants to continue tacit knowledge and traditional craftsmanship with the aim of educating a new generation of craftsmen. P2: Tacit knowledge, when captured and documented in a digital form, can become a database for training new generations of artisans who may or may not be connected to traditions.
Introduction
The study was mainly based on the hypothesis that Western culture allows the individual to flourish alone, while most cultured Asian people depend on group responsibilities. This scenario helped in the development of crafts like pottery, bamboo items, textiles, woodwork, painting, metalwork, etc. So the knowledge about this particular trade is getting depleted with time.
Pilot studies (Understanding the craftsman)
- Pilot study I: Bamboo basket making process
- Pilot study-2: Paper envelop making process for mentally disabled persons The second pilot study was paper making envelop process for the mentally disabled persons (Fig
The requirement of the problem motivated us to go to the ethnographic study in this research. One of the craftsmen is an expert in making bamboo baskets and the others were apprentices. The tools involved in the production of the products were sharp and could injure patients during work.
Methodology followed during the research
During the making of the craft items, some of the tacit knowledge becomes embedded in them and this. The next phase of the method is the conversion of the tacit knowledge into the explicit knowledge. In the induction method, the craftsman's experiences are taken, and then a conclusion is drawn from them.
Experiments
A detailed description of the bamboo craftsman's field extract is given in Appendix A. The process flow in making the curtain stand is illustrated in Figure 3.20. In the initial stage of the process, the bamboo sticks were shredded into a circular shape as shown in Figure 3.20a.
Details description of the Diya making process
The process of Diya making starts with the selection of the mud/clay which is suitable for Diya making. This is done by the craftsman along with checking the quality of the mud in the area nearby. In the case of the Diya making process, some of the silent markers are illustrated in Fig.3.26.
Details description of the Idol making process
The process of idol making begins with the selection of the mud/clay, which is suitable for making idol images. After observing the idol making process, some of the tacit knowledge involved in making it was extracted. In the case of the idol-making process, some of the tacit markers are illustrated in Fig.3.32.
Details description of bamboo tea-bag process
The thickness of the bamboo stem is important when making the bamboo tea holder. Fig.3.35: Generation of the silent makers in the process of making bamboo tea bags (Source: Author generated). Fig.3.36: Classification of the bamboo tea bag holder based on the shape of the bag.
Details description of curtain stand using bamboo-craft process
The coloring of the circular cut is done with water color so that it stays in the parts'. The number of designs for the frame was chosen according to the design of the room. In the case of the curtain stand, some of the tacit markers are illustrated in Fig.3.38.
Details description of bamboo basket making process
Beginner users and a master participated in making the bamboo basket. A craftsman knows how much flexibility is needed while working on a bamboo basket pattern 7. Finishing. In the case of the bamboo basket making process, some silent markers are shown in Figure 3.43.
Summary of the chapter
Introduction
Development of the fuzzy model for Diya making process
The production membership function of the FIS is shown in Fig.4.6 below. The output of the FIS engine leads to a categorization based on the inputs. The production membership function of the FIS is shown in Fig.4.14 below.
Development of fuzzy model for other case studies
Idol's fuzzy inference system involves matching a set of inputs to the output using fuzzy logic. The output from each node is the value of the membership function for the next layer. As discussed in Section 3.7, silent markers were generated from the protocol analysis of the ethnographic study.
Class distribution
FIS system for all the craft studies
The FIS system for the next 4 experimental case products was also built in the same way as described above. The proposed methodology was followed and research questions RQ1 and RQ2 were fulfilled so far in this chapter. The FIS system for all the models was developed from input from the crafts and the shape and size of the craft.
Summary of the chapter
Chapter-5 Adapting machine learning to craft domain
Introduction
An artificial neuron that receives a signal can process it and then signal to additional artificial neurons connected to it. The signal sent in the neuron is some real number, and the output is calculated by some non-linear function. Artificial neurons can have a threshold so that a signal is only sent if the total signal exceeds that threshold.
Transfer Learning for classification of craft
A task T can be defined as the two-element set of the label space and the objective function. Algorithms attempt to use inductive biases of the source domain to help improve the target task. The last three layers of the pre-trained network were replaced with our craft-based layers.
Summary of the chapter
Chapter-6 Validation of the model
- Proposed framework and applications
- Application of the proposed framework to a usable tool
- Transfer of tacit knowledge in usage
- Summary of the chapter
The schematic diagram followed for the development of the digital tool is shown in Fig. 6.4: Application of tacit knowledge to modern jug for holding water (Source: Author generated) Another example of transfer of the tacit knowledge is shown in Fig. This was the simplest application that can be seen and observed and the transmission of the artisan's tacit knowledge.
Chapter-7 Discussions and Conclusion
Discussion
The existing wealth of culture in craft plays an important role also in its silent component, which was also discussed in this thesis. Applying the tacit knowledge of a craftsman to a modern product can help make it active and alive. Tacit knowledge helps build confidence in the designer and craftsman while performing art or design or craft making.
