Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the extensive literature on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), with the specific aim of a thematic exploration of the literature to explain the main facets of SSCM development. Overall, the outcomes of this review provide a fundamental organization of the SSCM literature - from the perspective of a journey involved in the transition from traditional to sustainable supply chains. Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) addresses the management of the integration of economic and non-economic issues in a supply chain.

As such, Srivastava (2007) focuses on the literature primarily from the reverse logistics angle, and Abbasi and Nilsson (2012) undertake a thematic exploration of the SSCM literature. Overall, addressing these aspects provides a conceptually stronger organization of the SSCM literature based on the basic idea of a journey involved in the transition from traditional to sustainable supply chains. Thereby, the most important facets of SSCM development were assigned as the top level of the conceptual matrix.

With this bottom-up approach, the research team had reasonable confidence in the concepts inherent in the highest level of the conceptual matrix (key developmental facets). The top level of the landscape outlines the five major facets of SSCM development (Table III). However, within the second orientation of conceptual issues, very few comprehensive reviews have attempted to explain the intrinsic nature of the transformation involved.

Further expansion of the topic landscape in terms of broad topics and subtopics (streams of articles).
