Proposing

Interdisciplinary Teacher Education For the 4

th

Industrial

Revolution

(2)

Key Concept of 4

th

Industrial Revolution

“Virtual physical system” like IoT, VR, AI, Self-

driving Car based on a high speed network of 5G

(3)

Key educational concept for the Evolution?

“Convergence Education”

• It is because the

evolution is based on the network.

• Network can be established by convergence!!

• “Converge students’

aptitude freely in their school age!!

But, how to make it?

(4)

Educational Innovation

• In the new society, the model figure is Steve Jobs who had innovative mind on

technology as well as artistic design sense.

• But, how to nurture such kind of innovative mind and

artistic design sense in school?

• Educational Innovation!!

• Is it possible in the current school system?

(5)

One word to represent current school system?

“Compartmentalization” between

school subjects: math, English,

Science etc.

(6)

STEAM education

How to educate students in, for example, STEAM perspective under the situation of

compartmentalized school system?

“Nurturing Creative Manpower” through convergence!!

• Why STEAM education?

• It is because we believe that creative thinking

comes from

convergence.

(7)

Teacher

• Good teachers for creativity education like STEAM

rather than uniform education driven by

government and society since 1960.

• Uniform education was for training “good workers” with basic skills and knowledge, rather than creativity

required in the era of the 4th industrial revolution.

(8)

Teacher Education

• Departments of math, physics, chemistry, social study,

history….

• We still train “good teachers” for uniform education.

Current Teacher education system:

Same as school compartmentalization!!

(9)

Interdisciplinary teacher education

• We need the new approach for training teachers in the 4th revolution era.

• In the compartmentalized situation we cannot train teachers with converging mind well.

• Pre-service teachers in each department do not have remaining energy for studying other subjects besides their major subjects.

(10)

Korea National University of Education

• The only comprehensive teacher training institution, which trains all kinds of

teachers from kindergarten to high school at

undergraduate and

graduate levels, and is

responsible exclusively for the nation's new principal training program.

• Located near Sejong City, the new administrative

capital, it is accessible from anywhere in the country within 2 hours

humanities, social sciences, and technology, and

ultimately it is a way of learning that society, nature and the world are organically connected together to live

creatively and sustainably in life.

Keynote of 2018 LUMAT Symposium: What is Artificial Intelligence and how will it impact all our lives?

(17)

Final Remark

• For sustainable development of the 4th industrial revolution, the most important factor is to train teachers with converging mind and capability in school.

• It takes time to train them but, without the long term effort, we cannot support the highly flourished society.

• KNUE launched the beginning stage of the long term project.

• I ask all of you here to go together the very rough route for training good teachers for the new society.
