Supporting Documents Required to be Sent with Exchange Application

 An up-to date certified academic transcript (with translation if necessary)

 5 passport size photos (white background, 3.5cm x 5.0cm)

 5 copies of student’s passport (inclusive of hard cover and all pages)

 A fully completed Health Examination Report

 A signed Insurance Arrangement form

 A certified copy of IELTS/TOEFL/other English proficiency test result.

 A Recommendation Letter from student’s Academic Advisor supporting their application

 A Statement of Purpose defining student’s academic career and personal motivations for studying abroad in USM (approximately 300 words)

 Portfolio (for creative design based courses). Include slides and an academic reference authenticating work.

 Disability support details (if applicable)

Duration of Exchange One semester or one academic year

Language / GPA Requirement

We trust our partner universities would select students that are qualified to participate in Study Abroad @ USM

programme.

 If English is not the first language of teaching in your university, students are required to fulfill the minimum language requirement as below:

o TOEFL : Minimum 500 o IELTS : Band 5.5

o Any other English certification similar to TOEFL and IELTS will also be considered.

Course Load/Required Credits

Minimum 12 units need to be taken by students to be considered as full time students.

 Full course load is 21 units.

Language of Instruction Most courses are offered in English.

Course Registration

Course registration is done during the orientation week.

The deadline for course registration is the last day of the orientation week.

Orientation Week

Airport Pick-ups

 Only available for arrivals before and during orientation week prior to early notification.

 Pick-up is only available for airport pick-up at Penang International Airport.

Note: Airport pick-up does not applied to other airports

 If students arrive by train or bus, students are required to make own arrangement to come to USM.

 Students will be picked up by USM Buddy Students.

Buddy Students

 Buddy Students are a group of student volunteers at USM International.

 Exchange students will be contacted by the Buddy Students with details of the orientation week and airport pick-up services.

 Students are required to reply promptly with

confirmation of their attendance for the orientation week and their airport-pick-ups.

On-campus hostels

 Offered upon request only.

 No application fee is required

 Twin-sharing room with a common bathroom.

 There is no fixed meal plan

 Canteens are available in each hostel and various food outlets are located in the vicinity.

 Hostel fee: approximately RM600 per semester Off-campus housing

 Exchange students may opt to rent private apartments off-campus; located within walking distance from USM.

 Contacts of off-campus housing will be given upon request.

Insurance

Insurance

 Each Exchange Student must keep a valid health insurance throughout their stay in Malaysia.

 International students studying in Malaysia will be required to purchase a local insurance (determined by USM International Office) upon their arrival.

Visa

 All international students are required to apply for student pass and visa for the purpose of their stay in Malaysia.

 USM will help students to apply for the student pass and visa after their arrival; students are to enter Malaysia as tourists.

 Student Pass application fee: RM 150.

Visa application fee: vary according to country

Expenses
