1) variable type Survey variable

∙ variable obtained with the questionnaire Additional variable

∙ Newly created variable based on the questionnaire items and NICE basic information (related to sample design). Newly created (added) or modified variable to facilitate researcher use

Modified variable

∙ variable modified to facilitate researcher use based on the questionnaire items

2) Headquarters (HQ) data

Data type: All variables (excluding KSIC1) are numeric variables.

Additional variable: Refer to the layout file.

① variables related to the NICE basic information (sample design)

∙ Industry classification: 3 (Manufacturing Industry, Finance and Banking Industry, Non-financial Service Industry)

∙ Major industrial classification: 6 in all (refer to the code book to be available)

- Based on the major classification of the Korean standard industrial classification (9th revision) to extract industry-specific sample.

∙ Korean standard industrial classification, major/middle/minor classifications: Korean standard industrial classification, major/middle/minor classifications of KIPO

② variables related to inclusion in the previous year (from the 5th year)

∙ variables codifying inclusion in the previous year for companies surveyed from the 5th year. For other digits except for the 6 fixed for the first appearing digit (refer to the survey sequence number), refer to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. As 1 value is assigned to each digit if surveyed, 601001 refers to a (6th-year) company surveyed in the 2nd and 5th years.

③ Company initial establishment year

∙ Due to acquisition, merger, or division of a corporation, the company establishment year may be inconsistent with the year indicated by other variables. For instance, if the official establishment year is 2000, a company that had existed prior to that probably had its salary system and evaluation system adopted in the 1990s. The company initial establishment year variable is added. (Since the Workers survey results were not applied, the worker's year of joining the current company (Q1) and company establishment year (or company initial establishment year) may vary) Modified variable: Refer to the layout file (1st year only).

∙ variables modified from the items in the questionnaire,

e.g., HQ layout overseas business -> variable revised from "⑤ No overseas business"

item of the questionnaire.

Provision of subjective data

∙ Subjective items are not provided since they are directly related to corporate information protection.

- Representative name, main business (product/offering/item) name falls under this category.

Special code

∙ Special value not corresponding to the example of the questionnaire item - Not applicable: -8

- Do not know, no answer: -9 Analysis considerations

∙ There are many particular circumstances involving individual companies. In addition, the official system may differ from the actual practice. These things should be considered during analysis.

Example 1) There is an official re-training system for experienced recruits, but the answer was "not implemented" because there was no recruit in the year concerned.

Example 2) If there is no official incentive system, a particular year may have a stance of such payment.

∙ To ensure accuracy of the survey (measurement), the scale for the same content may be varied. If these are considered to be the same variables in analysis, they need to be considered.

3) Workers data

Data type: All variables are numeric variables.

Additional variable

① Consistency between HQ and operations in terms of industrial classification, team, and team leader

∙ Industry classification: 3 (Manufacturing Industry, Finance and Banking Industry, Non-financial Service Industry)

∙ Team classification: 5

- variables: 1→Administrative, 2→Production administrative, 3→Production, 4→Service, 5→Core professionals

∙ Team leader: 4

- variables: 1→Team leader, 2→ Production Foreman, 3→Team member, 4→Production worker

② Field-related variables (1st year only)

∙ A respondent may answer that he/she is performing multiple jobs if there is 1 item.

Two variables are added.

- Current job: W104_02, W104_03

- Job at current company: 1st job (W113_02, W113_03), 2nd job (W113_08, W113_09), 3rd job (W113_14, W113_15), 4th job (W113_20, W113_21), 5th job (W113_26, W113_27)

- Job at immediately preceding company: 1st job (W114_08, W114_09), 2nd job (W114_13, W114_14), 3rd job (W114_18, W114_19)

③ Process-related variables (1st year only)

∙ There is 1 item, but multiple answers are often found. One variable is added.

- Most important process: W156_02 - Most difficult process: W157_02

- Latest and most technically advanced process: W158_02 - Most technically retarded process: W159_02

④ variable codified based on subjective answers

∙ Qualification name codified: Refer to the open item code book (1st to 6th years) ∙ College/University name codified: Refer to the open item code book (1st to 3rd years) ∙ Department name codified: Refer to the open item code book (1st to 3rd years)

∙ Master's degree course major codified: Refer to the open item code book (1st to 3rd years)

∙ Doctor's degree course major codified: Refer to the open item code book (1st to 3rd years)

Provision of subjective data

∙ Items directly related to corporate information protection are not provided.

- Main production line name of the survey for production management Team Heads - Process name of the survey for Production Foreman

variable change and special codes: Survey items with changed examples or special values

① Modification of variables related to job fields

∙ For variables related to job fields, the survey examples (variable values) differ by industry. Change them to have the same variables.

∙ "99 others" for each detailed classification is for values that are hard to classify since the field is selected and detailed job description is provided.

∙ For details, refer to <Table 6-2> below.

② variables related to work group member evaluation for Production Foreman (1st year only)

∙ Q27 for Production Foreman, (1) Current members in use

- variables: -5→Outsourced, -6→Automated, -7→Process not in charge

③ Special codes (applicable to all items for the 1st and 2nd years): -8→Not applicable, -9→Do not know/no answer

as a holdings company in the 3rd- (2009) to 6th-year (2015) surveys, the corporate data with company name (code) changed is combined with the corporate data with prior company name (code). It is because that the corporate's characteristics persist, and this data is a panel data set.

5) Patent-related data

Data of 16 years (2000–2015) regarding the number of patents applied for, utility models applied for, design registrations, utility model registrations, and design registrations held by KIPO. For details, refer to the layout file.

Similar to corporate financial data, for companies with partially changed company name or entity code due to separation as a holdings company in the 3rd- (2009) to 6th-year (2015) surveys, remember the corporate data prior to company name (code) change; the data on the name and the changed name (code) are associated, considering the fact that the original company's characteristics persist. This data is a panel data set.

5) Balance panel data (English version is not available, only in korean)

Four wave data sets connected for 321 retained companies in the panel for the 3rd (2009) to 6th years (2015) and common variables of the 3rd (2009) to 6th years (2015) to be made suitable for longitudinal analysis.

The data structure is the same as the corporate financial data. One wave is treated as one case with variables modified based on the 6th year's data. Note, however, that some items surveyed from the 3rd year to 5th year but removed from the 6th year or modified were treated as missing values for the 6th year and subsequently included.

For details on the variables and data structure, refer to the variable list file contained in the same folder.
