(1)A Study on Korea’s Job Index(2012). Researcher-in-charge: Han Sang-Geun. In this study, a job index was developed, which not only includes job-related labor market information, like number of employed persons and wage, but it also includes a comprehensive set qualitative attributes of occupations, such as employment stability by occupation, growth potential, and professionalism. In this year’s study, the occupation index survey was carried out on the three categories of occupations, namely, administrative/managerial, financial/service, and agricultural, forestry and fishery, and we made policy suggestions by inducing the key issues related to occupations.. Ⅰ. Research background and objectives 1. Research background □ Information technology as well as the cutting-edge science and technology like biotechnology and nanotechnology are transforming industries and the world of work □ The importance of occupation-centered job information is growing amid changes in employment. ○ In particular, jobs have become a key agenda due to trends like youth unemployment, employment instability, and growing numbers of early retirees □ Despite rapid changes in the world of work and difficulties evident in employment environment, there is a lack of credible occupation information. ○ There is a serious mismatch in supply and demand of manpower, and a career bias toward specific occupations is found 2. Research objectives □ The objective of this study are as follows. ○ To suggest to the general public not only quantified information, like the number of employed persons by occupation and wages, but also information like stability, professionalism and growth potential of occupations. ○ To generate an occupation index for 10 years later to suggest occupation outlook that will assist the public make occupation choices. ○ To identify occupation fields with employment prospects for the vulnerable groups like people with less than high school diploma, females and the aged, and to address the problems and solutions associated with the related policies. ○ To explore new fields of occupation research, and to make policy suggestions to promote advancement of the labor market and human resource development system in Korea. Ⅱ. Major findings 1. Basic job index □ The basic job index consists of 7 domains that provide the basic information needed for the general public to understand and choose jobs: compensation, job demand, employment stability, growth potential, working conditions, professionalism and employment equality □ On the whole, the value of the job index is highest for legal/police/firefighting and correction related occupations at the present point in time □ The group of legal/police/firefighting and correction related occupations are expected to experience the.

(2) biggest improvement in the value of the job index in the next 10 years compared to the present point in time; in particular, of the 7 assessment domains, these occupations are projected improve in compensation domain and job professionalism domain □ In the three occupation categories of administrative/managerial, financial/service, and agricultural, forestry and fishery, the following have the highest job index value at the present point in time: judge or prosecutor, aircraft pilot, patent lawyer, petrochemical engineers or researchers, airline stewards, air traffic controller, and primary school teacher. ○ In the next 10 years, the value of job index is projected to improve by the greatest margin in the following occupations: management education and diagnosis expert, aircraft pilot, plant technician(mechanical), investment and credit analyst, shipbuilding engineering technician. engineering. 2. Analysis of characteristics by occupation □ Focus group interview(FGI) was carried out by occupation group and a number of common features were identified among different occupation groupings. ○ For instance, with the increase in consumption demand for quality services, the demand for the related occupations is growing. ○ With the progress in automation and mechanization, the occupations that are largely dependent on simple labor are being replaced by machines. ○ The growing demand for environment-friendliness and safety is also having a considerable effect on the world of work. ○ The advancement in informatization exerts a major impact on the world of work, while the growth in online shopping has revolutionized the method of selling products. 3. New jobs and jobs with good employment prospects for females and the aged □ The jobs with good employment prospects for the aged were identified by taking into account of the possibility of re-employment by the aged, the demand for jobs and working conditions at the present point in time and then analyzing those jobs meeting these criteria. ○ Such jobs as appraisers, petrochemical engineers or researchers, management education and diagnosis experts, administrative support managers, petroleum and natural gas production operators are found to have good employment prospects for the aged with respect to possibility of re-employment, job demand and working conditions □ The jobs with good employment prospects for females were identified among jobs with above-average possibility of re-employment, job demand, job quality and working conditions that allow females to take care of family while also going to work. ○ With considerations of these criteria, aircraft pilot, patent lawyer, computer system inspecting technician, generator facility technicians, cosmetic and soap product chemical engineers and researchers were identified as having good employment prospects for females □ New occupations. ○ The trends in newly emerging occupations can be summarized as follows: sophistication of consumption demand, sophistication of business management techniques, globalization and advancement of science and technology Ⅲ. Policy suggestions 1. Policies to introduce job protection system, ensuring the worker’s protection and economic status through securing of job professionalism 2. Supporting policies toward enhancing the possibility of employment by high school graduates and their growth in their workplace 3. Policies to prevent harmful effects of emotional labor 4. Policies to enhance the core competencies of primary and junior high schools students through creative.
