BACKGROUND

Laboratory safety is the key to reducing injury and illness. There are many exposures in the laboratory that pose a hazard to our health and may have never considered them as a hazard before. Hazardous in the laboratory can be broadly classified into chemical hazards, physical hazards and biological hazards.

Chemical hazards arise from the potential of chemicals to adversely affect the health of persons at the place of work and such hazards vary according to the inherent properties of the chemicals. Understanding about classification of chemicals hazardous, ventilation system in laboratory, chemical waste management and emergency action plan are important parameter to ensure safety in laboratories. In addition, safety equipment such as fume hoods, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), fire extinguishers, safety showers and eye wash are must be placed in a laboratory. The laboratory can be more secure if the lab user understand and comply safety procedure and always take precautions when working in a laboratory.

The two and half day workshop on laboratory safety training will focus on general principle of laboratory safety. In this workshop, the fundamental of the theory and principle will be provided together with hands-on of laboratory safety equipment.
