Literature Review

While lonely young adults would engage in sexting as it can be a substitute for casual sex (Lehmiller et al., 2020). In addition, sexting was found to be strongly related to the need for popularity and self-perceived popularity with the opposite sex (Vanden Abeele et al., 2014). According to Vanden Abeele et al. 2014), the sexual indulgence of women who engage in sexting.

For example, Rice et al. 2012) reported that adolescents engage in sexting primarily as their peers engage in sexting. Adolescents who observe peer involvement in certain behaviors have a higher tendency to perform similar behaviors (Tomé et al., 2012) than. The study by Vanden Abeele et al. 2014) indicated that perceived peer pressure was not significantly related to sexting.

However, the study of Vanden Abeele et al. 2014) shows that there is no relationship between perceived peer pressure and sexting. Past studies found inconsistent results on engagement in sex behavior between males and females (Benotsch et al., 2013; Winkelman et al., 2014).

Methodology

At the same time, participants who share the same point of view with the study will be invited to participate in the study to get the necessary knowledge and share it using purposive sampling method (Etikan & Bala, 2017). The researchers needed an average effect size for the four predictors to calculate the sample size for the current study, and these four predictors are loneliness, intention of sexual activity, need for popularity, and perceived peer pressure. As a result, G-Power was used to enter the average effect size score to calculate the sample size for this study, and the result showed that the current study should reach a minimum of 144.

In the actual study, the researchers collected 197 samples after removing the data from 307 samples that could not be used. Participants were required to read the information sheet and informed consent form to understand the topic of the current study and indicate their willingness to participate in the study. The purpose and details of the current investigation are stated in the information sheet to avoid any misunderstandings or unpleasant happenings in the future.

Five different instruments were used in this study, including the Sexting Behavior Scale (SBS), the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-8), the Youth Sexual Intention Questionnaire (YSI-Q), the Need for Popularity Scale (NFPS), and the Network of Relationships Inventory Relational Quality Version (NRI-RQV). Researchers have collected 307 participants in the study itself after achieving high reliability in the pilot study.
