Applications in other structures.

2. Geotechnical Engineering

Research topics in geotechnical engineering deals with the engineering behaviour and modeling of Malaysian soils, i.e. residual soil, marine clay and peat. The increasing environmental concern has led to a greater emphasis on the various aspects of environmental geotechnology. Some of the geotechnical and geoenvironmental research topics are outlined as below :

Mechanics of residual soils - properties, behaviour, modeling of saturated and unsaturated residual soils; rainfall induced slope instability and field monitoring; application of geosynthetics in residual soil.

Modeling of marine clays - advanced modeling of Malaysian marine clays under the various construction stress paths; tunnelling and excavation in soft clays.

Engineering behaviour of peat - consolidation behaviour; secondary compression theories.

(3)

Environmental geotechnology - soil-contaminant interaction, contaminant transport in soil, contaminated soil clean-up, landfill geotechnics.

In situ testing - use of seismic and surface waves techniques for determination of soil properties in foundation design and environmental control.

Rock mechanics - cut rock slope stability;

influence and identification of geological formations including microcracks and microfissures; tunnelling in rock.

3. Construction Materials

The research group engaged on research on ordinary and high performance concrete and other related construction materials. The research mainly focuses on producing quality and cost effective construction materials those made from mortar and concrete as base materials. Included in the research programs also research on the testing techniques and the maintenance of concrete buildings. Research topics are as follows :

The objective of the research project is to develop a traffic management system for urban traffic using latest available technologies. It consists of image processing technique for obtaining traffic parameters such as volume, queue length and speed. In addition the software and hardware are being developed for traffic controller that responds intelligently to actual traffic demand.

6. Water Engineering

Water Engineering at Department of Civil and Structural Engineering includes various fields such as Hydrology, Hydraulics, River Engineering, Water Supply Engineering, Groundwater Engineering and Maritime Civil Engineering. Knowledge in these fields are important in solving many water related problems – such as water supply, water pollution and water treatment processes, catchment area management, river erosion, coastal erosion, constructions of hydraulics structures – dams, reservoirs, man-made lake etc. Water crisis faced by our country recently indicates the importance of this field in our daily life.

This group involves actively in various research and consultancy activities. Research topics carried out at both undergraduates and postgraduates levels include:
