Forest Research Institute wins Nikkei Asia Prize

KUALA LUMPUR Forest Research Institute Malaysia FRIM will receive the Nikkei Asia Prize award for the science technology and innovation category for its contributions as a leading institution in tropical forestry research in the region

It was the third time a Malaysian institution has won the award as the Rubber Research Institute RRI had received it in 1998 while the

Medical Microbiology Department of University Malaya Medical Faculty was awarded the prize in 2002

Launched by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc Nikkei in 1996 the awards programme honours people in Asia who have made significant contributions in threeareas regional growth science technology innovation and culture

The prizes target individuals and groups in

northeastern southeastern southern and central Asia excluding Japan

The selection committee is chaired by Shoichiro Toyoda honorary chairman of the Japan Business Federation Nippon Keidanren

According to a statement from FRIM its director general Datuk Dr Abdul LatifMohmod would receive the award in Tokyo Japan
