SYNOPSIS
This academic exercise
hopes
tostc;dy
whether there isany'mark"d
sex bias in the
Iployment
and work roles of women in mediaprofessions
inMalaysia.
It studies sex discrimination in three main areas -namely
in emp loymerrty
recz-ui.tment, training,
andpromotion.
Amajor portion
of the paper is on the situationof
women at work in U;e
media,
in terms of numbers,positions
wi thinorganisational structures,
andproblems
facedby
the women.Four
hypotheses
relevant to thetopic
were formulated. Thisstudy
was doneusing
thesehypotheses
asguidelines.
Theanalysis
of the results obtained �rQm the survey was done
according
to thesehypotheses.
These
hypotheses
include:1)
More men than females hold executivepositions
in thejournalism
and
broadcasting
professions.2)
Women in the executivepositions
and otherhigher
ranks in thejournalism
andbroadcasting professions
have ahigher
educationthan their male
counterparts.
3) Training
opportunities areusually given
to the males ratherthan the females in the Journalism and
Broadcasting
professions.4)
Jobs withgreater responsibility
areusually given
to the malesthan the females in the
journalism
andbroadcasting
professions.The hypotheses were discussed under three areas of Sex Discrimination:
Sex Discrimination in
Employment/Recruitment; Training;
andPromotion.
Emphasis
wasplaced
on sex discrimina"tion of women in thehigher .Fanks.
From the results of the survey it was found that the
first,
secondand fourth
hypotheses
seemed relevant inshowing
sex bias at thehigher
ranks in media professions.But,
sex bias could not be
