Creativity, innovation name of the game

LETTERS: The Higher Education Institution is a place to enhance knowledge in the process of producing young professionals.

It is important to monitor and control the quality of teaching and learning that will relate to the image and reputation of a higher education institution in Malaysia.

Due to the global spread of Covid-19, the education sector saw a shift in education paradigm as new technologies were developed, others revised, and new learning formats created.

The education sector faced many challenges during this sudden unplanned transformation. This has led to online learning or e-learning being embraced to substitute the usual face-to-face approach.

The shutdown of Higher Education Institutions stimulated the growth of online education

activities via e-learning to ensure the smooth delivery of teaching and learning despite students and teachers not being physically present in the classroom.

Many universities around the world have fully digitalised their operations in understanding the current dire situation.

The collaboration between the government and Higher Education Institutions had rectified many issues faced by students such as deterioration of mental health, inadequate information, issues with financial resources and lack of private space, as well as reliable Internet access or

technology.

Prior to this, educators worked very hard to engage with their students digitally and made sure that they were also equally proactive in distance learning. Educators have become more innovative and creative in adopting alternatives to traditional learning using scientific methods.

This involves computer technology, mainly on the use of the Internet and other devices to smoothen the development of education according to our higher education policies and objectives for better delivery.

Some online platforms used so far include unified communication and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Canvas and Blackboard, which allow the educators to create educational courses, training and skills development programmes.

They include options of workplace chat, video meeting and file storage that keep classes organised and easy to work which support the sharing of content like Word, PDF, Excel files, audio and videos.

These also allow the tracking of student learning and assessment through quizzes and rubric- based assessments for submitted assignments.

Additionally, virtual classroom platforms like video conferencing (Google Meet, Zoom, Slack, Cisco, WebEx) and customisable cloud-based learning management platforms such as Elias, Moodle, BigBlueButton and Skype are increasingly being used.

The World Economic Forum (2020) highlighted three trends that could hint at future transformations reshaping the education sector:

Education, nudged and pushed to change, could lead to surprising innovations such as home learning via interactive apps and live television broadcast.

Growth of public-private educational partnerships to develop new cloud-based, online learning and broadcasting platforms to upgrade education infrastructure.

The widening digital divide due to the level and quality of digital access. Many educational and

training opportunities are conducted to improve the education system to ensure e-learning is well managed.

One factor is the adequacy of technology which determines the accessibilities of online learning.

Solutions and alternatives plans were created from studies conducted by local university researchers by keeping track of students' performance, as well as taking care of students' welfare during this difficult time.

Indeed, Covid-19 has shown how important it is for all parties to make a joint effort to create a quality teaching and learning environment for educators and students.
