SHAH ALAM: Pharmaniaga Bhcl is explor- ing the use of u n m a n n e d aerial vehicles or drones for pharmaceutical-grade medical delivery to e n h a n c e its logistics capabili- ties and make healthcare services more ac- cessible, especially to r e m o t e and geographically challenging areas.
In a s t a t e m e n t Monday, the c o m p a n y said the initiative aimed to reduce deliv- ery time and cost as well as increase sup- ply chain efficiencies as d r o n e delivery is estimated to be five times m o r e efficient than conventional delivery methods.
It said the first phase of the Proof of Concept (POC) of the project, code- n a m e d Project Eagle, has successfully taken place recently in Pulau Paiigkor, Perak which involved a distance of 4.2 km f r o m a jetty in M a n j u n g to Klinik Kesi- hatan Pangkor with approximately three kilogrammes of medicines delivered for emergency medical treatment.
"The POC was the first longest-distance d r o n e medical delivery of pharmaceutical products over water in Malaysia, led by a female pilot," it saicl.
G r o u p m a n a g i n g director Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope said Project Eagle
would b r i n g the c o m p a n y one step closer to rolling out a large-scale p r o g r a m m e for t h e delivery of vital medicines via drones.
"A normal m o d e of delivery using a ferry f r o m the jetty in M a n j u n g to the clinic at Pulau Pangkor will take approximately 30 minutes, as o p p o s e d to only 3.5 minutes when using the d r o n e as demonstrated.
"Despite the unfavourable weather, as it was drizzling with p o o r visibility d u e to 100 per cent cloud cover, Project Eagle in Pulau Pangkor was carried out success- fully," he said.
He safcl project Eagle would continue with several more stages at different loca- tions and terrains, including the r e m o t e areas in Sabah and Sarawak a n d findings f r o m the project would be d o c u m e n t e d a n d s u b m i t t e d to t h e relevant ministries and g o v e r n m e n t agencies.
The project was s u p p o r t e d by the Min- istry of Health, Ministry of Science, Tech- nology a n d Innovation, Malaysian Global Innovation a n d Creativity Centre, Tech- nology Park Malaysia, Civil Aviation Au thority of Malaysia, Boustcad Holdings Bhd a n d Meraque Services Sdn Bhd.
