CEGeoGTech RESEARCHERS CONTINUE TO SHINE

Kangar, 29 September – Universiti Malaysia Perlis' (UniMAP) Centre of Excellence for Geopolymer and Green Technology (GEGeoGTech) continues to reap successes in the international arena by raking in five medals in two separate exhibitions.

The product Geopolymer Concrete For Sidewalk, which was patented in the United States of America and Europe won a gold medal at the Property, Creativity and Innovation (INFOINVENT 2015) exhibition which took place from 25 to 28 November at the Moldexpo International Exhibition Centre, Moldova.

UniMAP Vice Chancellor Brig. Jen. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Kamarudin Hussin said that at the first exhibition, which focused on intellectual property and creativity, CEGeoGTech sent 2 research products and was represented by its visiting lecturer Dr. Andrei Victor Sandu, who was also a co-researcher for the Geopolymer Concrete For Sidewalk project.

“I am greatly proud at the success of this product thanks to the efforts of my supervised student Muhammad Faheem Mohd. Tahir, a remarkable feat seeing as the exhibition attracted more than 450 entries from across the world.

“Another research project – the Geopolymer Artificial Agregatewhich was run by my former supervised student Dr. Rafiza Abdul Razak who is now a Senior Lecturer at UniMAP's Faculty of Engineering Technology (FTK) scored a bronze medal,” he said in a statement here today.

Dr. Kamarudin added that Dr. Rafiza's research product was successfully registered under intellectual property in Malaysia.

Meanwhile at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2015 in Korea, two CEGeoTech researchers won three silver medals through Dr. Zarina Yahya, a senior lecturer at FTK, for her invention Palm Ash Geopolymer Brick.

According to Dr. Kamarudin, Dr. Zarina's work was a Doctorate level research product that uses waste material from the palm oil industry to be made into light bricks which can be used in 24 hours after being produced.

He remarked that two other products won the bronze, namely the Geopolymer Brick Machine Vol. 2 – co-created with the Saudi Arabian research centre King

Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) – and the invention R. KMR Repair Materials.

He explained that CEGeoGTech's victory was a continued feat this year when last week three GEGeoGTech researchers were named winners of Best General Book Award in the Research and Development (R&D) category at the National Book Awards 2015 which was held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

“During the ceremony organised by the National Book Development Foundation, three UniMAP Senior Lecturers, Dr. Sam Sung Ting, Dr. Nik Noriman Zulkepli and Dr. Mohd. Firdaus Omar triumphed through their book Biodegradable Polymers that was published by UniMAP Publishing,” he continued.
