ORGANISED BY

MALAYSIAN TIMBER CERTIFICATION COUNCIL

IN COLLABORATION WITH CO-ORGANISED BY

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) and the Institute for Environment and Development, (LESTARI) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, are pleased to co-host the International Conference on Timber Certification:

Exploring Future Frontiers on 15 - 16 March 2023 at Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, together with the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), and the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) as co-organisers.

Forests continue to be an important part of the global agenda since the landmark Rio Earth Summit in 1992. This is evident in the renewed calls for sustainable forest management in the Global Forest Goals and Targets of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2030. Suitably, timber certification schemes have become critical tools in the sustainable management of forests and the production of sustainable sourced wood products. As consumer demands and global market trends continue to shift, there is greater urgency to adapt sustainability tools, such as timber certification, to ensure that they remain effective and innovative.

Since its inception in 2001, the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) continues to evolve through an iterative process of continual improvement and engagement with all forestry related stakeholders. As of 31 December 2022, there are 37 forest management units with a total of 5.81 million hectares of forests, and 360 chain-of-custody certified

companies under the MTCS. Public (RM100)

DIALOGUE 2:

FUTURE FRONTIERS FOR TIMBER CERTIFICATION

While the global acceptance for timber certification has been encouraging, there remains a need for schemes such as the MTCS to innovate in order to

continue to be relevant to society. Strategic partnerships and cross-sectoral exchanges will only

help timber certification schemes further take root.

This dialogue will identify some of the opportunities for innovation in timber certification and explore

synergies within the forest sector and beyond.

Established more than 20 years ago, the MTCS has continued to be at the forefront of tropical timber certification. With continual improvement and engagement

with stakeholders, the MTCS remains an essential tool for sustainable forest management and continues to safeguard the integrity of the timber supply chain.

This dialogue will explore some of the impacts of timber certification as experienced by Malaysian stakeholders as

well as identify some enabling conditions for the mainstreaming of timber certification.
