and SMARTER*phonics Level 1 –

an effective instructional program for all children to read and write in English

(in line with the Revised National Preschool Standard Curriculum 2017)

Date: 20 May 2017 (Saturday) Time: 08.30am – 5.00pm

Venue: Seminar Room, Level 1, Administration Building, Kolej Keris Mas, UKM Bangi, Selangor

Trainer: Dr. Ong Puay Hoon PhD (Cognitive Science) Licensed Assessor for Psychometric Tests

(British Psychological Society) &

President, Dyslexia Association of Sarawak (DASwk)

When Dr. Ong first realised that her daughter, then in Primary 4, had been constantly punished by her teachers for repeatedly failing her spelling tests and not doing her homework, she embarked on a journey to seek why an apparently-smart girl was unable to read and write at her age-appropriate level. It uncovered the realisation that the patterns of her daughter’s learning weaknesses matched her own when she herself was in school. Realising that there is a great need to raise awareness and understanding of dyslexia and other learning disabilities in Sarawak, she and a group of parents and other interested individuals, set up DASwk in 2005. Since then, Dr. Ong and her team have conducted many workshops on dyslexia for parents and teachers in different parts of the State.

Aims of Workshop

The workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and understanding of:

 what dyslexia is

 signs and symptoms of dyslexia

 causes of dyslexia

 how an academic problem of dyslexia can exacerbate into a borderless social- emotional problem if left unidentified and unsupported
