Bighead carp grow-out in Laguna de Bay

Benjie Tocon, Dr. K in g ’s farm m a n a g e r , th e y s t a r t e d raising m ilkfish and tilapia in 1 9 8 3 . in 1 9 8 7 , th e y in tro d u ce d b ig h ead carp in t h e i r p e n s . A t that time the K ing farm oper

ated a b igh ead carp hatchery w h ic h s u p p lie d fry a n d

fingerlings for their grow -out operations.

N ot long after how ever, the bighead carp hatchery industry flourished in nearby R izal tow ns, p articu larly in B inangonan and C ardona. T his w as th e time that som e tr a in e e s w h o g r a d u a te d fro m th e SE A F D E C -conducted training course on h atchery operations applied their acquired know ledge and skills in a new business venture. T he new entrepreneurs selling bighead carp fry and fingerlings for grow- out operators w ere m ore efficient. Soon, the K ing farm stopped its hatchery opera

tion. They found that it w as m ore econom i

c al to buy the fingerlings from the boo m ing hatchery industry rather than raise them them selves.

G row ing bighead carp is p aying a lot o f dividend. Atty. Tacon reports that they use 380,000 fingerlings to stock a 50-ha p e n , w h ic h a m o u n ts to s o m e 7 ,6 0 0 fingerlings per ha. A t 85% su rv ival rate, and an average w eigh t o f 1.75 kg per fish after 6 m onths of culture, they can easily get as m uch as 11,305 kg p er ha. At the current price of U SD 0.70 per kg, this yield

translates to about U S$ 7,900 (U S$1=P40) gross profit per ha.

Mr. O scar P uzon is another avid raiser of bighead carp. H e operates a fishpen in C ardona tow n. O f this area, he allocate 10 ha to serve as nursery for both m ilkfish and bighead carp.

In the m id-'80s, he took over from his father w ho started the business. Presently, Mr. Puzon uses a stocking rate o f 5,000 pieces per ha. H e believes that this rate m akes for better and faster grow th of the fish.

He sells his 2.5-3 kg bighead carp at US$ 0.70 per kg to fish traders w ho pick up the fish from his farm. These traders earn about U S$ 0.12-0.25 per kg after se ll

ing the fish to retailers. The retailers then sell to consum ers at U S$ 1.75-2.00 per kg.

Mr. Puzon cites the advantage of grow ing bighead carp as the lake w ater under

goes a certain degree of salinity variation:

“ T he N ap in d an H y d ra u lic C o n tro l S tructu re (N H C S) a f f e c t s th e m i l k f i s h in d u s try . T h is s tr u c tu r e is a flo o d c o n tro l m e a su re as flo o d in g o f la k e s h o re a re a s o ften o c c u rs d u rin g th e ra in y season. T h e lak e is a p r in c ip a l c a tc h m e n t area and the N HCS is closed to prevent m uch flooding.

W hen the w aters in the M a

n ila B ay exceed the w ater level in the lake, the N H C S opens and lets saline w aters into the lake. T his h as been perceived as b eneficial to the lake fishers, especially for those w ho raise milkfish.

H ow ever, the reverse flow is also a boon for b igh ead carp since this fish gro w s better in freshwater."

Mr. T iboy R eyes w as one o f the first batch o f trainees w h o participated in the freshw ater aquaculture cou rse conducted by SEA FD EC in 1986. At that tim e, he w as operating a 1.5 h a fishpen w here he raised m ilkfish.

H e b o u g h t 3 ,0 0 0 f in g e rlin g s from SE A FD E C and started his bigh ead carp culture. H e operates a total o f 100 ha, 40 h a of w hich are stocked w ith bighead carp.

W ith a stocking rate o f 5,000-15,000 fingerlings per ha, he produces 4-kg fish.

H e sells these at U S$ 0.87 per kg in the m ajor fish m arket in N avotas,

T hese three gro w ers are m ost likely to c o n tin u e w ith th e ir v e n tu re . T h e y are unanim ous in saying that "unlike m ilkfish and tilapia, w e don't need to feed them with additional com m ercial feed and they can thrive w ith natural food in the lake." Atty.

Tocon em phasizes: "E ven in transporting our harvest from our pens to th e fish m ar

ket, w e don't need ice to freeze the fish and keep the b igh ead carp in good quality.”
