Our View
On the bomber
During the past week-and-a-half or so, an unknown person or persons has terrorized the city of Speedway by planting bombs in various locations for no apparent reason. N o notes have been found; no group has claim ed responsibility. Police suspect that the bomber is acting alone. But why?
Perhaps the bomber is satisfying a need for attention through his actions. Or maybe he is venting his rage on Speedway for some reason that only he knows. W hatever the case, an entire community is now living in fear, not knowing whether it is safe to do even the most mundane, day-to-day things.
Miraculously, nobody has been killed yet, and none of the first seven bombs even resulted in any injuries. But the eighth bomb did result in an injury, costing a Speedway citizen part of his leg.
Does the bomber mean to cause personal injury with his actions, or is terrorism his sole goal? Nobody kncws, and it really doesn’t matter. What does m atter is his being stopped.
We can only hope that he w ill leave a d u e that w ill aid author
ities in apprehending him. H ere’s hoping he doesn't blow tm
anyone else—except, perhaps, himself. ™
A valuable lesson
The Indiana U niversity Student Association has won its biggest battle, to date, with the administration.
TUSA’s funds w o e frozen w h o it deposited 98,000 in fees collected during registration into a private bank instead of the university’s Student Organizations Account. IU SA took the action—as directed by the IU Student Senate— to avoid the university's fiscal control, but when Dean of Student Services Thomas Schreck learned o f the move, he ordered the student activities director to sign no m ore checks for IUSA.
IUSA countered with a list of demands to be m et before it would agree to deposit the 18000 into the SOA, and, to make a long story short, IUSA won.
It was agreed that IU S A ’ s funds would never again be frozen unless its m oney was used to purchase alcohol or gifts.
Furthermore, IU SA was allowed to maintain its own bank account— without university controls. In return, IUSA deposited the $8,000 in the Student Organizations Account.
What happened in Bloomington may have set a precedent, but it should be rem em bered that the battle was fought over funds that IUSA raised on-its own and not over university funds. But the thought here is a good one— that a student organization should have control over funds it raises, free from any university interference
