The Institute of Islamic Studies was established on November 22, 1973 by Presidential Decree 342 as an integral part of the Philippine Center for Advanced Studies (PCAS). 543 issued by the President of the Philippines on July 9, 1979, the Institute was re-established as a separate entity of the University.

COLLOQUIUM SESSION 2

The recent groundbreaking of the UPD OVCRD-funded inventory of Marcelo Adonay's musical compositions is a good starting point, albeit narrow in scope. The focus of the presentation, however, will be the Filipiniana section of the Music Library of the University of the Philippines, where one will find holographs of some of the finest Filipino art composers. Its graduates stand out not only as exemplary artists and academics, but as integrated individuals with a keen sense of their duties and responsibilities as citizens of their country and of the world.

The four papers in this session all deal with College-level structures through which UP Diliman units execute programs, projects and partnerships for the benefit of UP Diliman constituents and various publics. Through these structures, UP Diliman is therefore able to fulfill its vision of honor, excellence and service to the nation.

Bamboo musical instruments, indigenous to the ethno-linguistic groups of the Philippines, are unknown to most Filipinos. To develop the synthesizer, sound recordings of five bamboo instruments were analyzed and correlated with the physical properties of the instruments. Two-interval forced-choice (2IFC) tests were conducted to determine whether the synthesized sounds were sufficiently indistinguishable from the original instrument sounds; the tests gave satisfactory results.
