GOD’S WORDS FOR TODAY (Lk. 5:12-16) The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke

While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and besought him, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean." And he stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I will; be clean." And immediately the leprosy left him. And he charged him to tell no one; but "go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to the people." But so much the more the report went abroad concerning him; and great multitudes gathered to hear and to be healed of their infirmities. But he withdrew to the wilderness and prayed.

REFLECTION:

How do you approach those who seem difficult to love, or who are shunned by others because they are deformed or have some physical or mental weakness? Do you show them kindness and offer them mercy and help as Jesus did? The Lord Jesus is always ready to show us his mercy and to free us from whatever makes us unclean, unapproachable, or unloving.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, inflame my heart with your love and make me clean and whole in body, mind, and spirit. Amen.

Prayer of St. Gertrude

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

FROM THE INSTITUTIONAL SUSTAINABILITY OFFICE:

Strategic Direction on Creating Sustainable Futures

Goal# 12 Responsible Consumption & Production Goal #6 Clean Water and Sanitation

The whole month of January is also known as Zero Waste Month, as mandated by Presidential Proclamation no 760, dated May 5, 2014.

Zero waste is an advocacy that promotes the designing and managing of products and processes to avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials.

It is a goal to be ethical, economical, efficient and visionary to guide people in having a resourceful lifestyle, in which discarded materials can be re-designed as resources for others to use.

As a Lasallian Community, let’s support and strengthen our participation to our local communities in sanitation and waste management. Let us be mindful of the wastes we create.

FROM THE INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES:

PNEUMONIA What it is:

The disease is an infection of the lungs usually caused by bacteria or a virus. Pneumonia can cause mild to severe illness in patients.

How it's spread:

The disease is usually spread by inhaling tiny droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. It can also be contracted by contact with contaminated surfaces, followed by contact with one's mouth, nose, or eyes.

Smokers, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems and diseases like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are also more likely to get pneumonia.

Symptoms:

You may have pneumonia if you experience cough, fever, and fast breathing. Take note, though, that signs and symptoms of the disease can vary depending on one's age and health condition.

Treatment:

The DOH said the following measures may be taken:

• Antibiotics are the "mainstay treatment" of bacterial pneumonia. These are only given with the prescription and supervision of a doctor.

• Hospital admission may be needed for some patients with moderate to severe pneumonia. This would also depend on one's age – usually the infants and the elderly, or those with weak immune systems or other medical conditions.

• Increase intake of fluids.

• Get bed rest.

Prevention:

You can prevent getting pneumonia by doing the following:

• Immunization with the following vaccines:

Haemophilus influenzae type B, pentavalent vaccine, measles vaccine, and pneumoccocal vaccine. Also, pertussis in pentavalent vaccines to address diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type B.

• Proper nutrition to boost immune systems

• Frequent hand washing
