GOD’S WORDS FOR TODAY (Lk. 10:25-37) The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke,

There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus said, to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim? He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

FROM THE OVCAR – OFFICE OF THE INTEGRATED SCHOOL PRINCIPAL:

1. This entire week (Oct. 5-9) is scheduled for the accomplishment of PT’s. Subject teachers are requested to monitor whether the allotted days and times are spent wisely by the students. While we advise our students to study even more diligently during this period of the quarter, their health should not be compromised. Please remind them that enough rest to sustain healthy body must be observed. We also do not want to hear complaints from the parents that our students are having group meetings somewhere just to finish their projects. This is definitely not allowed because we are after our students’ safety and security. Let us all reiterate these PT guidelines to our students.

2. We would like to thank and congratulate the entire MAPEH Department headed by Ms. Imee Mendoza and Mr.

Joseph Vallejo for the successful conduct of Intramurals. May the life lessons we learn from sports and culture be part of our Lasallian values. Although, the GS Intramurals for Gr. 4-6 will be continued this month of October.

3. Meanwhile, the English, Social Studies and Christian Living have joined forces in sponsoring an array of supplemental learning activities for the next three months (Oct. Nov. and Dec.) with the theme: 2015: Time for Global Action and Effective Communication for People and Planet through Mary’s Intercession. Let us sustain our usual kind support to all the activities prepared for everyone.

A Prayer that Jesus May Live in Us

Come Holy Spirit, take possession of our hearts and so guide our actions that we may be able to say that they are the work of your hands rather than ours and that our whole being in each of its functions is entirely dependent on your good pleasure.

Happy are they who live and act only by the Spirit of God for it is no longer they who live but Jesus Christ through his Holy Spirit, who lives in them.

Amen.

FROM THE OVCAD – INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES:

Healthy Diet: Eating with Mental Health in Mind

You’ve probably heard the expression, “you are what you eat,” but what exactly does that mean? Put simply, food is fuel, and the kinds of foods and drinks you consume determine the types of nutrients in your system and impact how well your mind and body are able to function.

Drinks

Avoid: Sugary drinks and excessive amounts of caffeine. Sugary drinks have empty calories and damage tooth enamel.

Caffeine should also be avoided in excess, as it can trigger panic attacks in people who have anxiety disorders.

Try to: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day (about 2 liters) to prevent dehydration. Studies show that even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes, in addition to physical effects like thirst, decreased or dark urine, dry skin, headache, dizziness and/or constipation. Limit caffeine if you have an anxiety disorder.

If you feel like you need some caffeine, try tea. Tea has lower amounts of caffeine than coffee and has lots of antioxidants- chemicals found in plants that protect body tissues and prevent cell damage.

Feast of Bl. Bartolo Longo

Blessed Bartolo Longo (February 10, 1841-October 5, 1926) was a Satanist priest who later repented and became a lay Dominican, dedicating his life to the Virgin Mary and the promotion of the Rosary. [He was an affiliate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.] Bartolo Longo was born into a wealthy family on February 10, 1841 in the small town of Latiano, near Brindisi, in southern Italy. His parents were devout Roman Catholics and taught him to pray the Rosary daily. As a young man he attended the University of Naples and became involved with a movement that led him into a

misfortune, he abandoned Satanism and was introduced to the Dominican Father Alberto Radente - who heard his confession and guided him further throughout his life. Longo spent a period of time repenting he made his profession as a lay Dominican. He took the name Brother Rosario in honor of the Rosary. The date of his conversion was October 7, 1871. In 1872, now as Brother Rosario, he began to do good service to make up for his time as a servant of Satan. He went to Pompeii, where he had joined a charitable group, and aided the wealthy widow Countess Mariana di Fusco. At the suggestion of Pope Leo XIII, Longo and the Countess Mariana di Fusco were married on April 7, 1885. The chaste couple continued to do many charitable works and provided for orphaned children and the children of prisoners which for its time was revolutionary. In 1906 they donated the entire property of the Pompeii shrine to the Holy See. Longo was encouraged by the bishop of Nola to begin the construction of a larger church - the cornerstone being laid on May 8, 1876. The church was consecrated in May 1891 by Cardinal La Valetta (representing Pope Leo XIII). In 1939, the church was enlarged to a basilica, known today as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Pompeii. On October 26, 1980, Longo was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
