Academic Information

Admission Prerequisites

The Admissions Board consists of the APNTS Academic Dean and Registrar and each of the APNTS/AGST PhD Program Directors. If the above entry requirements are not met, provisional acceptance may be offered when deemed appropriate while the student meets the unmet requirements. Provisional admission may also be granted to an exceptional applicant who may then have to do additional assignments or courses.

Application Procedure

Applications for housing must be submitted in writing to the Coordinator for Campus Housing at the time of application. Prepare a statement indicating how the studies will be funded, including specific commitments from institutions or individuals who may act as sponsors. Read the application form for more detailed instructions, which can be downloaded from www.apnts.edu.ph.

Important Visa Information for PhD Students

Upon arrival in the Philippines, all international students must obtain a visa or permit that allows them to study: student visa, missionary visa, special study permit, or International students will need to maintain a valid tourist visa while waiting for a visa that allows them to study. Students will complete forms for both the Immigration Office and the National Office.

Examine, submit photographs, letter of requests, payment and passports, and undergo health examinations as a requirement for the Bureau of Quarantine. Students will wait for the release of Student Visa and Alien Certificate of Registration I cards.

A student must have taken at least 9 units on the PhD program before you can get direct study rights. Each student is limited to taking Directed Studies up to 6 units only throughout the PhD programme. Independent or directed study or a combination of the two is permitted in the overall PhD programme.

Incomplete means that the course requirements were not completed in the time allowed in the course syllabus. If the “I” is not removed three months after the incomplete request is submitted, the course grade becomes Withdrawn or “W”. This "W" will appear on the transcript of records.

PhD in Holistic Child Development (HCD)

The Doctorate in HCD is designed to meet the need of the Church and society for skilled child advocates, practitioners and educators. Dan Balayo and CI (represented by Menchit Wong and Dr. Dan Brewster) to work on courses suitable for both the MA in HCD and the PhD in HCD. In November 2009, the first PhD in the HCD class took place with five students: one Indian and four Filipinos.

Since then, professors from various parts of the world have come to teach at APNTS to equip students for holistic ministries with children. HCD804 Approaches to Holistic Ministry with Children HCD805 Physical Development of Children and Public Health HCD917 Intervention Strategies for Children in Crisis.

PhD in Transformational Development (TD)

Sometimes courses may be scheduled at other times to accommodate a professor's schedule or a special learning opportunity. The international component of the seminary itself would act as an excellent laboratory of multicultural life. The lower cost of the program compared to Western tuition requirements makes the offer accessible to a much wider range of students and scholars.

The Christian orientation of the program brings theological and evangelical (Good News) integrity that transcends secular epistemology. In March 2012, the office of the Bresee Institute was dedicated and the preparation of the program was launched together with the Transformational Learning degree.

TD990 Practicum Students who wish to take TD990 Practicum will arrange with the TD Program Director at a time that works with the students' schedule. Courses will be offered in 2-week modules, scheduled in two blocks during each school year, usually January and February, and May to July.

Students who wish to take the TL957 internship will arrange it with the TL Program Director at a time working with students. Courses will be offered in 2-week modules, scheduled in two blocks during each school year, normally January and February, May to July.

PhD Course Descriptions

Research and Writing (9 Units)

The final assignment in the course will be the first draft of Chapter Two of the Proposal, Literature Review. After the course, in consultation with their advisor, students will continue to review the literature, refine and write Chapter Two. In consultation with their advisors, students will refine their research project design and write the first draft of Chapter 3 of the proposal.

They will also refine earlier chapters of the proposal in light of any changes in the research design and submit the first draft of the full proposal as their final project. Students, in consultation with their advisor, will continue to refine the Proposal so that they will be ready to defend the Proposal shortly thereafter. Advisors will coach students in the process of writing, defending, and presenting the final written copy of the dissertation.

PhD in HCD Courses

HCD805 Physical Development of Children and Public Health Orients the students with the fundamental concepts and theories that provide the basis for the body of knowledge in the field of public health. This course prepares the students to work with children with a good theoretical and conceptual basis in public health and the strategies used to bring about behavioral changes for health and disease prevention in individuals and groups. The course also examines the issues of physical development of children, diseases that affect the development of children in various circumstances, such as HIV/AIDS and its dimensions.

The course also focuses on planning care for the caregivers of the children who often experience secondary traumatization. Explores the different historical contexts through which children are perceived and discusses how worldviews influence children's lives.

PhD in TD Courses

The prophet Jeremiah talks about the search for "the shalom of the city". Nehemiah presents a practical rationale and sequence that demonstrates both community development and community organization to rebuild a city that seeks justice, fairness, and biblical principles. Conflict must be either "issue-based conflict" or "identity-based conflict," the latter being much more difficult to resolve. Merciful Ministry will be seen as a starting point for the further ministries of advocacy, community development and community organization.

TD959 Signs of the Kingdom in Complex Cultures This seminar defines what is meant by "Signs of the Kingdom" as understood in the biblical and Christian sense. Neighborhood "mapping" of resources, initiatives and sites will be assigned as part of the course requirements.

PhD in TL Courses

Learners will reflect on their philosophy of transformational learning developed in previous courses and its implications for curriculum building. They will examine models for curriculum design and assessment and then evaluate sample curriculum resources in light of those models and their personal philosophy of transformational learning. TL915 Transformational learning across the life span Explores understanding of human development and the formation-transformational opportunities and challenges in each life phase.

Students will reflect on their experience of Christian discipleship in light of transformational learning theory, biblical patterns for nurturing faith, historical and. Students will reflect on the experiences and issues facing adolescents in their ministry context and develop plans to enhance holistic transformational learning experiences for those youth.

Scholarships

Application for scholarships is through the Scholarship Committee and there are eligibility requirements for each applicant. Based on the evaluation of the scholarship committee, the applicant will be informed of how much and for how long the scholarship is valid. Students who have received scholarship funds and whose financial situation changes at any point in the program must notify the Scholarship Committee so that their eligibility can be reassessed.

The student will apply for the scholarship in accordance with the procedure and in accordance with the provisions defined in the scholarship policy described above. Students will be required to complete the assignment and maintain a 3.5 grade point average in order to continue receiving the scholarship.

Comprehensive Examinations

With each question, students include a bibliography of sources from which they will draw. answers/solutions students should use these resources to demonstrate their knowledge of the literature relevant to the question. This takes place outside of class and is presented to the teacher. examiners both electronically and on paper. Student papers are worth 60% of the final grade of the comprehensive exam, 20% for each question averaged by the two professors.

Attempts will be made to match the second examining professor to the general area of ​​student-generated questions/problems. During the oral examination, students will be asked questions about the literature related to any question/problem submitted by the student, not just the specific questions/problems selected for the papers.
